Interviewed by Mike Gibson, Evonne relates how she no longer reads the papers because every story starts with the word "Aboriginal". "I don't want you to get me wrong.Being Aboriginal doesn't worry me. ....You see. I want to be myself. No one else. I hardly knew what an Aboriginal was until I came to Sydney. Back where I come from we were the only A family in town, and most of what I know about Aboriginals I leaned out of books."

Casals is among a group of vets who supposedly whine about Evonne getting too much attention. An "annoyed" Gong clobbers Casals and overcomes the rain and slow balling Julie Heldman in the semis. Evonne leads 4-1 in the second set beofre Court runs away with the final, complimenting Evonne by remarking, "That's the best you've played against me, you're coming along fine."

Hi Rollo,

A query about the Eastern Suburbs hardcourts of 3 Oct 1970. Are you sure it's not Goolagong defeated Hole 60 62 sf and A. Coleman 62 60 in final? That's what's in World Tennis magazine, I think.

Finally added in all your info Andy. Once the school semester ends (mercifully it's in another 2 weeks) I'll have a lot more time to devote to Evonne.

Hey Rollo,
Lucky you to finish your semester in two weeks. I have two months to go (though classes finish in one month). It's going to be very interesting to see how Evonne's stats add up at the end (# tournaments, matches won). I hope she does get over the 1000 wins mark and she's going to be really close to 100 titles too, I think (though probably just under).

I can delete all my posts now, right? :-)
