The smallest of three WTA events this week is the Zeromax Tashkent Open. Who will be strong enough to outfox, outsmart and outplay the others? That is up to you!
After an intense qualifying adventure, we can finally begin with the main draw. Last year's finalist, Iroda Tulyaganova, has made her way through the quallies and joins Tatiana Panova and Michaella Krajicek.
The top half saw only one seed tumble in this first round, when Emilie Loit lost a gruesome three set battle against Melinda Czink. Czink, named a favourite for this tournament, met the challenge. For seeds Bychkova, Laine and Krajicek there were few troubles, although Bychkova was forced into a third set by Shikha Uberoi. Another notable performance was made by Panova who only gave away one game to Russian wildcard Evgenia Rodina. Uzbek Ivanna Israilova bowed out however to Katerina Bondarenko.
The bottom half was equally friendly to the seeds with three Italian seeds going through with Maria Elena Camerin, Antonella Serra Zanetti and Mara Santangelo winning. Alyona Bondarenko was the only seed to lose out in this half to local favourite Akgul Ammanmuradova. Her sister Valeria had lost in the top half in a close match against Parra Santonja, thus leaving only Katerina to defend the honour for the family. Iroda Tulyaganova impressed once again with an easy win against Ukraine's Olga Savchuk. She looks like a possible finalist again.
