1. Tatiana Golovin FRA
2. Venus Williams USA
3. Ai Sugiyama JPN
4. Shinobu Asagoe JPN
5. Anna-Lena Groenefeld GER
In the top half Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams join in after having had a bye in the first round. Tough competition might come from Tatiana Golovin and Flavia Pennetta. Golovin had to overcome Shinobu Asagoe in a three-set battle, where Flavia Pennetta needed only two sets against qualifier Ivana Lisjak. The Chinese players Na Li and Tian-Tian Sun may still go strong in this half too. Especially Li looked in fine form, giving only one game to Jill Craybas in their first round encounter.
The bottom half sees Venus Williams and Anna-Lena Grönefeld join the competition first. Their half seems less crowded with favourites. although Ai Sugiyama and Shuai Peng may look dangerous. Sugiyama had no trouble with compatriot Akiko Morigami. Peng had more trouble in seeing off her fellow Chinese player Ting Li. She will have the backing of the home crowd though.
