PYW - US Open | Quarterfinals | Please vote!

PYW - US Open

It's that time of the year again. The final Grand Slam is presenting itself; many main draw players are more than eager to display their skills in the coming week.

Quote:
Ranking Points:

W - 650
F - 456
SF - 292
QF - 162
R16 - 90
R32 - 56
R64 - 32
R128 - 5
Qualifier - 10 *
Q3 - 5
Q2 - 2
Q1 - 1

* If a qualifier loses in the first round of the main draw, she receives no first round points as usual

Note:

This is a special week in the history of PYW. The US Open will be the first event where players have to defend points they earned at last year's event at Flushing Meadows.

It is also very special, because players will, for the first time, earn bonus points for beating their opponents. The amount of points will depend on the opponent's ranking.

The Top Favourites

Kim Clijsters BEL [4]

Lindsay Davenport USA [2]

Elena Dementieva RUS [6]

Daniela Hantuchova SVK [20]

Anastasia Myskina RUS [13]

Mary Pierce FRA [12]

After six gruelling days of superb and exciting tennis we have finally arrived at the quarterfinals and instead of having a general preview, this time we'll be looking more closely to each match. After all: this is a Grand Slam!

Alicia Molik AUS [14]vs Nadia Petrova RUS [9]
The by far most popular Australian tennis darling is enjoying her best Slam of her career. True: she only played the Australian this year, but so did some others and they aren't in the quarterfinals, are they? Despite a mediocre Grand Slam record, the 14th seed knows her winning ways through the numerous events the PYW Tour offers. Semi finals at Luxembourg and Antwerp justify that fact.

In comparision to Molik, Nadia Petrova doesn't stand a chance to being the most loved player in her country. Although that might be some strong words. Miss Petrova reached the semi finals at Roland Garros AND Wimbledon, so you can hardly call inexperienced at this kind of level.

H2H: Alicia Molik and Nadia Petrova have never met on the PYW Tour

Kim Clijsters BEL [4] vsDaniela Hantuchova SVK [20]
#3 vs #2: it's a match up a Grand Slam final worthy, but a quarterfinal will also do. Since Dementieva suprisely lost in the third round, this two players have been put forward even more to take the title.

Daniela Hantuchova already knows how it feels to lift the US Open trophy. The Slovak tennis wonder took home the first Slam in PYW history exactly twelve months ago, but if she'll do it again... Things didn't look so brightly two weeks ago. The twenthieth seed could barely win a match, but has found the right form just in time. Daniela outlasted Pin, Kirkland and co-toptenner Maria Kirilenko quite easily to be in only her second GS quarterfinal appearance.

While last year in the quarterfinals Gisela Dulko awaited Hantuchova, this time it's much higher profiled player. Kim Clijsters, who went on a 26 match winning streak earlier this year, finds herself once again in the latter stages of a tournament. The Roland Garros champion is the only surviving top seed this tournament and is looking as strong as never before. With an average loss of 5 games per match, the Belgian 4th seed is in her third Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season, after missing the Australian Open.

H2H: Kim Clijsters and Daniela Hantuchova are tied at 1-1

Mary Pierce FRA [12]vs Anastasia Myskina RUS [13]
There's something about Mary. The blonde bomber had to endure a somewhat odd streak: the continious losing of finals. Mary lost five finals before finally getting the monkey of her back at the hardcourts of Toronto two weeks ago. Before that, she had to settle with the runner up cheque at Berlin, Amelia Island, Antwerp, Filderstadt and... the US Open. And now she's back to where it all began and to where the defending of all those final points WILL begin.

Mary faces a player that only seeded one place below and ranked one place below her in PYW too. #4 Anastasia Myskina knows the feeling of playing Pierce in big matchups. The Russian starlet celebrated her first tiel in AI against Pierce, but then got blown away in another final in Toronto, with this time Pierce celebrating her first ever victory. Another comparision between Mary and Anastasia: whereas Mary got to the final in New York, Anastasia equalled that feat in Melbourne a couple of months later. Will the score also be this balanced?

H2H: Mary Pierce leads Anastasia Myskina by 3-1

Anna Chakvetadze RUS [29] vs Tatiana Golovin FRA [23]
Perhaps the least attractive quarterfinal of the four. Least attractive when it comes to their resumes that is. Both have had the pleasure of playing a final, but both lost it and both never go to another one after that. Should we start feeling sorry now? Ofcourse not. And let us tell you why:

Anna Chakvetadze is most likely the quarterfinalist who has earned the most bonuspoints in the last four round. By eliminating top favourite Elena Dementieva, Chakvetadze earned herself a whopping 200 points. Which means a huge jump in the rankings for someone who still played juniors two years ago. Also, the 29th seed has multipled her won Grand Slam matches by 4, seeing that she only won a match in Melbourne this year against Aranxta Parra Santonja.

Tatiana Golovin has had more success in that department: a fourth round in New York last year, a QF in Melbourne, a third round in Paris and again a QF at Wimbledon have made her the top twenty player she is today. Will this be another quarterfinal or will the gods have mercy on her 'troubled' Grand Slam soul?

H2H: Tatiana Golovin leads Anna Chakvetadze by 1-0

I know I've been a liar
And I know I've been a fool
I hope we didn't break it
But I'm glad we broke the rules
My cave is deep now
Yet your light is shining through
I cover my eyes
Still all I see is you
