Re: 10,000$ Djibouti City, Djibouti, Dec10, Draws

I really ask myself what's the points of having a tournament in the middle of nowhere and in a country like Djibouti
  • there is no local girl playing - obviously there are no female players from Djibouti so what's the point of bringing a tennis tournament here.
  • there is one african girl playing and that only because she has received a wildcard otherwise the girl from Nigeria would probably not be able to afford the travelling costs. Furthermore having a second satellite the same week in South Africa is quite a smart schedule from the ITF
  • not even 32 players can afford to come here/are willing to come here

The question is: it would have been better not to have any tournament there? Having this it will always be better to not have a tournament at all. Maybe they bring some school kids to see the tournament, maybe they want to put a tiny country like Djibouti in the map. Maybe the president loves tennis. Who knows? But I do not think it is a bad idea.

You are so wrong. They have to start from somewhere and a 10k is a great starting point. Maybe they don't have players but they for sure have kids who might attend the tournament and see what tennis is all about.
Big to people organizing and sponsoring this.

Codino

After 22 tournaments played in her short career the only match she ever won was in Djibouti 2011

Apart from that match, the only set she ever won was today. She is devoted to Djibouti

lets hope she will be the real inspiration for the kids from Djibouti. I like the idea that tennis gets more and more international don't get me wrong. However this tournament(s) imo just shows that tennis is still a richmen's sport and not even 32 players - also from western countries - can afford such a trip. I highly doubt a girl from Djibouti will ever do so. The other girls from Africa like Nigeria or Ghana are not even coming here

Maybe because Djibouti is as far from Ghana or Nigeria as some parts of Southern Europe and it's actually closer from India. The thing is being held in December it doesn't help at all.

ANY tournaments in Africa are a positive thing at this point, regardless of where they are or the field that shows up. If they get the local community involved and have kids show up to watch, it's all good in my book. There weren't any female tennis players in the Middle East when the WTA started getting all gung-ho on Dubai/Doha, and now we have a girl from Oman competing on tour who got inspiration from watching those matches on TV. You never know what can happen.
