Name: Madalina Gojnea
Nationality: Romania
Born: 23/08/1987 in Poliesti, Romania
Year End Ranking 2004: 808
Current Ranking 2005: 302
Career High: 302

Madalina started the year 2005 as #808 in Vale do Lobo and immediately won that tournament with a 64 46 60 victory over Lucia Jimenez. She stayed in Portugal and played Montechoro, where she lost in first round to a Kristina Barrois who herself played excellent tennis at that time.
Gojnea took a break for more than a month to return in Athens and won the tournament again, flew to Patras after that victory to win there too without losing a set. Noteable: Athens was played on Clay, Patras on Hardcourt.
She turned home to Romania to play two tournaments in Bucharest and Pitesti where she reached the quarterfinals, both times losing to Alexandra Dulgheru
Didnt play for 2 months to return at the Arad satellite and won that easily without losing a set. Flew to Bucharest again played there and reached the final.
In August she played her first 25000$ tournament of the year in Coimbra, Portugal. She qualified and reached the quarterfinals losing 63 06 57 to Aravane Rezai. Another Semifinal in Bucharest and then to 25000$ Challenger of Sofia where she reached the semis losing 26 75 26 to Tamira Paszek.
Two first round outs at Tbilisi and Benevento followed
Her biggest succes came in October where she reached the quarters of the 50000$ Challenger of St.Raphael in France

Number of tournaments played in 2005 so far: 16
Match record 2005: 49-11
Tournaments won: 4 (Vale do Lobo; Athens; Patras; Arad, all 10000$)

2005 wins over:
# 80 Emilie Loit
# 139 Mariya Koryttseva
# 189 Yulia Beygelzimer
# 209 Kristina Barrois
# 211 Magda Mihalache
# 264 Paula Garcia
# 305 Monica Niculescu
# 309 Karin Knapp
# 371 Lauren Breadmore
# unr Tamira Paszek

Where I see her in 2006:
Ranked about 120 and 130.

Name: Tanja Ostertag
Nationality: Germany
Born: 26/09/1987
Year End Ranking 2004: 769
Current Ranking 2005: 661
Career High: 637

At position 769 Tanja started 2005 in Stauttgart but wasnt very succesful there losing 26 36 to Darija Jurak in the first round. Also in Melilla and Bolton she wasnt able to win a match. Finally in march she won her first match 76 26 64 vs Sofia Kvatsabaia in Athens. First noteable tournament was Ramat Hasharon in April where she reached the semis (26 36 vs Buryachok).
She went to Mexico then, played three tournaments there but only reached the second round once. Back in Europe she failed to qualify for Orestiada and Vaihingen, lost her first round match in Garching and didnt win a match till September then. Out of nowhere she whon the 10000$ of Vessy, Switzerland 64 76 vs Stephanie Rizzi in the final. Full of motivation she travelled to the States to play Ashland, Troy and Houston, all 50000$. She reached the third quali round twice there

Number of tournaments played in 2005 so far: 20
Match record 2005: 17-19
Tournaments won 2005: 1 (Vessy, 10000$)

2005 wins over:
# 372 Julie Coin
# 492 Zuzana Zemenova
# 617 Arpi Kojian

Where I see her in 2006:
Tanja seems to have the money travelling around the world and is in my opinion intelligent to do so. She plays some very weak tournaments especially in Asia. Should be ranked about 400

Name: Sonal Phadke
Nationality: India
Born: 09/06/1982 in Mumbai, India
Year End Ranking 2004: 722
Current Ranking 2005: 868
Career High: 424

With a ranking of 722 Sonal started the year at the WTA event in Hyderabad. But the WTA level obviously was to high as she lost 36 16 to Katerina Bondarenko in the qualies. Until eptember she didnt play outside of India and only reached on quarterfinal at Indore in May. After Indore she didnt play for 4 months to come back in Jakarta, reached the second round there, flew to Balikpapan and reached the quarters there

Number of tournaments played 2005 so far: 8
match record 2005: 7-9
2005 wins over:
# 985 Liza Pereira
# 1265 Ilge Alpay

Where I see her in 2006:
She will slowly retire playing 5 to 7 Indian tournaments in 2006. But I think time is over for Sonal as she isnt the "youngest" anymore and never had that much success on the tour

Name: Jodi Kenoyer
Born: 22/08/1981
Nationality: USA
Year End Ranking 2004: 697
Current Ranking 2005: unr
Career High: 520

To sum up Jodi´s year wasnt very succesful as she only played 4 tournaments (3 of them outside the States ). She only won one match vs Maria-Isabel Camberos in Toluca. After Patras in April she stopped playing. Injury or just university-- anybody knows?

Tournaments played in 2005 so far: 4
2005 match record: 1-4
2005 wins over:
unr Maria-Isabela Camberos

Where I see her 2006:
Playing some tournaments in the States. But obviously she seems to have money as she is one of the few US players ranked about 800 who plays outside the States and even in Europe. Will never crack the top 500

Name: Surina de Beer
Nationality: South Africa
Born: 28/06/1978 in Pretoria South Africa
Year End Ranking 2004: 837
Current Ranking: 299
Career High: 130

Who is remembering Surina de Beer, reaching the 3rd round of Wimbledon in 1998. Not too many I guess. After a very bad year 2004 she came back strong in 2005. SF Tipton, SF Montechoro, SF Bolton and finally a Challenger win April in Porto Santo 64 63 over Laura Zelder. And guess what? That was her first title after 8 years (Saga in 1997). But that wasnt enough. She immediately won the 3rd tournament in Porto Santo as well. At 25000$ tournament of Monzon, Spain she reached the quarters, reached the final of 10000$ Oxford, SF of 25000$ Felixstowe and Lagos I. At Lagos II she retired in the second round, hope nothing serious

Number of tournaments played in 2005 so far: 22
2005 match record: 52-19
Tournaments won 2005: 2 (Porto Santo II and Porto anto III)
2005 wins over:
# 136 Saori Obata
# 291 Kelly Liggan
# 303 Irina Bulykina
# 311 Maria-Jose Argeri
# 412 Neuza Silva
# 412 Petra Cetkovska
# 412 Masa Zec-Peskiric
# 415 Sarah Borwell
# 419 Emily Webley-Smith
# 436 Anais Laurendon

Where I see her in 2006:
Two possibilities:
a.) She retires by the end of 2005 after a very succesful year
b.) She will crack the top 200 again

Name: Claire de Gubernatis
Nationality: France
Born: 18/07/1986
Year End Ranking 2004: 790
Current Ranking: 465
Career High: 465

Like many, she started her year in Portugal, Montechoro as well, where she qualified and reached the second round. In March she reached the QF of Bolton and in may the QF of Tortosa and Bucharest. In June she won her first ITF title in Orestiada (64 67 61 vs Sperling). At 10000$ Brussels she nearly won again, but Leslie Butkiewicz was the stronger one at the end winning 57 64 61. It seems she likes Belgium as she reached another final at Westende in August losing 46 63 16 to team mate Diana Brunel. Currently she is playing in Japan and reached another QF at 10000$ Toyko-Akishima

Number of tournaments played in 2005: 25
2005 match record: 36-24
2005 wins over:
# 424 Katalin Marosi
# 425 Laura Zelder
# 470 Veronika Chvojkova
# 493 Rebecca Llewellyn
# 534 Lizaan du Plessis

Where I see her in 2006:
Claire should be a top 300 player

This is a great idea Xian - I love it!!

Name: Cassandra Barr
Nationality: Australian
Born: 19/10/1982 in Melbourne Australia
Year end ranking: 682
Current ranking: 535
Career high ranking: 535

Cassandra is really a late bloomer. She started playing tennis at age 14 after being an elite gymnast for 7 years. Cassie has been steadily climbing her way up the world rankings due to her very successful 2005. Cassie started her schedule in Wellington winning a match and pushing Lauren Breadmore. She then reached the last qualifying round of a 50K in Bendigo, she followd this up with a quarter final in Warnambool beating Adriana Szili along the way. Cassie then made her way to Indian qualifying for a 25K in Mumbai getting to the Quarter finals of the 10K at Yamaguchi and beating a red hot Yurika Sema along the way. At the 50K in Fukuoka she made the last round of qualifying taking a set off Breadmore. She then qualified for the 25K at Gunma but then had a little " hick up " losing 6 matches in a row. The end of the year has been very strong Qualifying and reaching the second round of the 25K in Japan and the following week getting to the second round of the 10K in Tokyo

Number of tournaments played in 2005: 22
2005 Match record: 18-22
2005 Wins over:
# 439 Yurika Sema
# 471 Adriana Szili
# 483 Thassa Vitayaviroj
# 512 Christina Horiatopoulos
# 516 Leanne Baker

Where i see her in 2006:
With some good results Cassie may well reach the top 400 but unfortunately i don't see her going much further

Name: Rachael Dillon
Nationailty: Irish
Born: 11/12/1987
Year end ranking: NR
Current ranking: 761
Career high ranking: 758

Rachael is currently the star of Irish tennis and she is a pretty talented player. Dillon started the year in Bolton qualifying and followed that up with a second round showing in La Palma. She also made the second round at Alacobaca and then 3 weeks later recahed the second round in Istanbul. The tournament that has been the highlight of her year was at her hometown of Dublin, she beat the number 8 seed Sarah Coles and the very talented Bibiane Schoofs before falling to number 1 seed Emily hewson 6-4 in the 3rd set after having match points. The following week was also successful qualifying and reaching the second round at Wrexham. She then went on a 5 match losing streak before winning a match at the qualifying for the 25K at Glasgow. She has ended the year very poorly and consistency is lacking in her game.

Number of tournaments played: 16
2005 Match record: 9-16
2005 Wins over:
# 488 Karoline Borgensen
# 740 Anna Hawkins
# 869 Pilia Suomalainen
# 897 Sarah Coles
# Unranked Bibiane Schoofs

Where I see her in 2006:
With her inconsistent play I don't think Dillon will be able to get that close to the top 500. She will have to play a fuller schedule to achieve this.
