The US hard court season got underway with the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati. We have reached the semi final stage already. Let's take a look at the PYW ranking of the four remaining participants:
PYW Ranking of the Participants:
21. Patty Schnyder SUI
34. Iveta Benesova CZE
73. Chanda Rubin USA
81. Sania Mirza IND
The two highest ranked remaining players were knocked out last round, as Patty Schnyder (PYW #21) beat Ai Sugiyama (PYW #12) and Sania Mirza (PYW #81 and the lowest ranked player among the quarter finalists) upset Vera Zvonareva (PYW #6), both in three sets.
Schnyder, who surprisingly reached the semi finals of Wimbledon earlier this season, now faces Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic. Benesova had little trouble with qualifier Séverine Beltrame, winning 6-3 6-3. Beltrame can look back at a great week here; her performance in Cincy provides her with a Top 100 ranking after this week.
Mirza's opponent in the semi finals will be American Chanda Rubin. Rubin, who has been out for many weeks on the PYW Tour, will be keen to beat the Indian teenager. She did not let #8 seed Kveta Peschke stand in her way as the American prevailed 6-1 2-6 6-4.
Two exciting encounters. Four titleless players with high hopes. Whose hopes will be shattered today? It's your decision. Vote for who you want to win!
