Italy SHOULD win all singles, and maybe lose the double, result might be 3-2 or 4-1 for Italy, that's what I think and hope at least....go Franny, Flavia and Mara! and welcome to the team Romina !!!

Mexico is my house, Italy is my heart....

14 Jul 2006 - Stadium Casablanca, Zaragoza, Spain - Whit Sheppard
Medina Garrigues to face Pennetta in opening rubber

The draw for the Spain v Italy World Group Semifinal in Zaragoza was held Friday at the Stadium Casablanca, site of this weekend’s tie on red clay, and has resulted in some tantalizing match-ups.
The draw for the Spain v Italy World Group Semifinal in Zaragoza was held Friday at the Stadium Casablanca, site of this weekend’s tie on red clay, and has resulted in some tantalizing match-ups.

Saturday´s opening singles rubbers will see Spanish No. 1 Anabel Medina Garrigues (world No. 24) play the Italian No. 2, Flavia Pennetta (world No. 18), followed by Italian No. 1 Francesca Schiavone (world No. 14) against Spanish No. 2 Lourdes Dominguez-Lino (world No. 47).

“I know her [game],” said Medina Garrigues of Pennetta, “We’ve played each other a couple of times before (1-1 head-to-head).”

“It’s important for us playing in front of our people. If I can give one point for Spain in the first match, it will be easier for the other players.”

Pennetta commented, “It’s a very difficult match tomorrow against Anabel. If I win the first point, for sure it’s good for our team.”

Schiavone, who will be an interested observer of Saturday’s opener, said, “I believe in Flavia and I believe in our possibilities here.”

The Italians come into this weekend’s play hoping to hold the momentum from their 4-1 upset win in Nancy in late April over last year’s losing finalists, France. Spain advanced with a 5-0 whitewashing of Austria in Valencia.

Sunday´s reverse singles will match Medina Garrigues (ESP) versus Schiavone (ITA), followed by Dominguez-Lino (ESP) against Pennetta (ITA). The tie concludes Sunday afternoon with a doubles rubber pitting Maria Sanchez Lorenzo/Virginia Ruano Pascual (ESP) against Mara Santangelo/Romina Oprandi (ITA).

“I like to play for Spain, for me it’s a pleasure to be on the team,”
said Sanchez Lorenzo. “I’ll be very happy to play in the doubles but we hope that they win the singles and we don’t have to play.”

The two countries have met four times previously in Fed Cup play, each team winning twice, but this will be the first time they have played on Spanish soil. The hosts have won four Fed Cups since 1993 (also ’94, ’95, ’98) and were finalists in 2000 and 2002.

Italian Captain Corrado Barrazzuti hopes to duplicate Italy’s recent World Cup triumph in Fed Cup play but knows the Spanish won’t cede easily, particularly on their home ground.

“It’s a difficult match but we came here to win,” Barrazzuti said. “We want to try to go to the end of the road but we know Spain is a good team and we are ready to fight.”

The Spanish are captained by Miguel Margets.

Fitness will be a key factor, as the tie will be played in searing Spanish summer heat. Temperatures are forecast to be in the vicinity of 33ºC Saturday and 36ºC Sunday, which should make for challenging conditions as Spain and Italy vie for a spot against the USA-Belgium winner in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas finals.
