Flipkens and Craybas to lead out in Ostend
The appropriately named Sea’Rena, a brand new stadium just a block back from the ocean, is hosting the semifinal tie of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas in Ostend between Belgium and the USA. In fact, this is the first time these two nations are playing one another in Belgium and going into the tie the USA has won all four meetings they have contested.
The 5,000-seat stadium has sold out and world no. 2 Kim Clijsters said she is very excited about the opportunity of playing in her own country.
“We have had so many great team atmospheres in Fed Cup and after winning it a few years ago in Madrid, you just create this special feeling about playing Fed Cup,” said Clijsters. “We are playing in an arena that is sold out and in a way I am playing for my family, friends and fans. It’s great for us and for them to see us playing in Belgium. That’s why I keep playing Fed Cup. I love it and I love playing in a team atmosphere.”
American captain Zina Garrison said the USA side has gelled very well, and is very excited to lead the American team once again. Three of the four girls were on the team that beat Germany in the first round, and new member Mashona Washington plays for the first time this year.
“They are all looking forward to playing,” said Garrison. “Today is Friday and they’re all saying ‘okay are we playing tomorrow?’ so they can’t wait to get started.
“I think the biggest thing for the team is not to focus on what other people are saying. I’ve just being trying to get them up and ready to go.”
