An article from the Telegraph (thanks to linnie)

Coach forces Mauresmo to go solo
By Alix Ramsay in Rome
(Filed: 12/05/2005)

Being a coach is often a thankless task - if the player does well, the player is a genius; if the player does badly, the coach is an idiot.

Lois Courteau, the man charged with helping Amelie Mauresmo to fulfil her dream of a French Open title, has had enough. He has sent Mauresmo to the Italian Open to defend her title on her own while he sits at home sipping red wine and reading the newspaper.

The temporary split is, he thinks, for Mauresmo's own good. As she was losing to Nadia Petrova in Berlin last week, Courteau realised his player had no clue what she wanted to do next. Listening to his words of wisdom before the match and then calling on her own experience during it, she was tying herself in knots. It was time the French No 1 worked it out herself.

The plan has clearly worked - Mauresmo sailed past Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-0 and enjoyed every second of her time on court. The Australian is no claycourt player and, much as Mauresmo would never say so, her 65-minute work-out was no more than a public practice session. The strained abdominal muscles that kept her out of the Warsaw tournament a fortnight ago appear to have healed and her serve is back to something like its best.

"Today it was much better and more consistent," she said. "I think I played a real claycourt game today, with a lot of spin, and I tried to come in when I was able to."

The trick for Mauresmo is to learn to enjoy being at Roland Garros. Time and again she has arrived in Paris as the woman to beat and then frozen the moment her toes touch the French clay. Courteau is hoping that if he keeps his distance this week, Mauresmo will learn to handle the pressure by herself and, just maybe, she might learn to relax enough to play well at the Open this month.

Just to bolster her confidence even further, Yannick Noah has offered his help in the final preparations for Paris and may turn up here if Mauresmo reaches the latter stages of the tournament.
