Molik Withdraws

Molik plots French raid from home after infection

By Richard Hinds
April 28, 2005

Alicia Molik's preparation for the French Open has received a setback with the world No.8 forced to withdraw from next week's German Open as she continues to battle an inner-ear infection.

Molik, who also missed a tournament in the United States two weeks ago because of the complaint, had been expected to return to competition in Berlin after bypassing Australia's Federation Cup tie in India with the consent of Australian captain John Alexander.

But Lisa Chaffey of management agency Octagon said Molik felt she needed to spend another week at her training base in Melbourne before she felt comfortable travelling. She was expected to start her European claycourt preparation at the Italian Open in Rome, from May 9.

"She's not too concerned about it (her French Open build-up,)" Chaffey said. "She just thinks she needs to stay fit and healthy and she is better off staying home for another week to do that."

Molik's illness has stalled her rapid ascent up the world rankings. The 24-year-old had climbed as high as No.4 this year before her second-round loss at Amelia Island in the US three weeks ago. With good results at the French Open and Wimbledon she could entrench her position in the world top 10.

The French Open preparation of Lleyton Hewitt has also been disrupted by a foot injury that forced him to miss three tournaments. Hewitt, who has been training in Sydney, is expected to make his return in the Masters Series event in Rome next week or, at the latest, in Hamburg the following week.

she hasnt been higher than where she is now in the rankings, but she's been as high as number 4 in this years race rankings since AO (she was number 2 beforehand i think).

Anyways, As long as she is strong enough to play rome and paris, she should be fine. It's a shame though as she had a good chance to put herself in a position to overtake Myskina post paris should myskina have failed to go really deep into RG. I supposed she can still do it with some solid performances.

Alicia

I was looking forward to seeing her in action again this week

Hopefully she comes back strong at Rome and has a really good tournament to prepare well for the french. I wonder if she'll pick up either Strasbourg or Istanbul to replace Berlin?

I really don't blame her. I had an inner ear infection a year ago and it was really tough to shake--really one of the most painful diseases I have ever had. You actually lose some of your balance as well, and it takes some time to gain it back. Additionally, flying can re-aggrevate the infection, so I completly understand why Alicia pulled out.
