Round one Report

An interesting day, with lots of interesting action.

Brandi d. Camerin

What a disappointing display from the attractive Italian. Kristina played well, much like she had in qualies, hitting consistently and getting everything back, but she didn't have to do much today, Maria Elena hit unforced errors repeatedly. The more she missed, the more she would try hit close to the line, and the erros just kept mounting. Kristina though seemed to know that all she needed to do was keep the ball deep and her opponent would make an error.

Martinez d. Irvin

A very entertaining match, a real contrast in styles. Conchita, as usual, hits loopy shots, high topspin, slice etc but Marissa definitely handled the tactics well. Conchita was up 5-0 in the 1st set, and Marissa made a great comeback. She strated approaching the net off Conchi''s slice backhand and this started to work for her. The tiebreak was entertaining, lots of goo rallies and Marissa approached the net on quite a few occasions. I hadn't seen her play before, does she always attack the net this often? The secon set it was Marissa who had conchita on the rops, up 4-0 with 2 points for 5-0, but Conchita took all the pace off the ball and Marissa strtaed over-hitting again.

Pierce d. Bedanova

This match strated off very well because Bedanova was executing her all-court game perfectly, hitting sharp volleys and getting good depth on the ball. She had Mary moving around in the first 4 games, but once her serve went off, her game fell apart. Mary started attacking Bedanova a lot more, and it became very difficult for her to approach the net when Mary was pushing her metres beyond the baseline.

Peer d. Stosur

Peer has a nice game, hits lots of off-pace angled shots and likes to attack the net if she gets the opportunity. Stosur herself was having an off-day, hitting shots long all day, but it may have something to do with the lack of pace which Peer was feeding to her. Peer led 5-0 in both sets so it could have been worse. In the second set, Samantha strated to charge the net a lot more, this worked for a while, but Peer strated to pick where the volley would be hit and hit some great passing shots.

Sugiyama d. Sanchez-Lorenzo

The first set was all Ai, she was hitting the play hard and deep, and coming in behind the short ball. Maria is gorgeous, nice olive skin with snady blonde hair and not a hair out of place, it alomst seemed as if she didn't want to mess herself up by running! But in the second set, Maria strated hitting more aggressivvely, and this match became a real contest. Match point was hilarious, Ai hit 3 volleys which Maria got back, then on the 4th she lunged for the volley, Maria hit a lob and Ai went to jump for it, but being a short girl she missed it, and lucky for her it landed out! She smiled and siad to the crowd, 'Good miss!'.

Frazier d. Jidkova

This match wasn't overly entertaining, Amy just hit with a bit too much pace for Alina, who has a nice game but doesn't really change anything when her oponent is playing better. These girls seem like friends, they were chatting after the match, and were ven comparing cell phones.

What match did you see?

Conchita was 5*- 4 in the first set, but not 5-0 (0-2, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4)
And in the second set, Marissa was 4-2*, and then Conchita won 4 games in a roll
