Day 1 Report

Yesterday I went to the Opening Day and it was awesome!

I saw some great tennis and a lot of players.

Matches:

Peschke def. Karatantcheva 6-3 6-1
Sesil came out firing in the first game. I thought that she was going to just rout Peschke, but then the errors came. Peschke did nothing special; she just had to keep the ball in the court. Peschke hits very flat and she just kept the ball in throughout the match. Sesil was just spraying errors all over the place. The serve was also a factor. Sesil was just spinning most of them in. The last time I saw her live, at the US Open, her serve seemed better there. She just needs to keep working on that. I love Sesil’s game and she is definitely a future star but she was just not on her game today. She seemed a little bit slow today too. She is normally much faster. It just was not a good day for Sesil. Peschke does not have any weapons and will most likely be crushed by Patty in the next round. Also Barbora Strycova, Nicole Vaidisova and Nick Bollettieri were watching Sesil’s match.

Brandi def. Jackson 6-3 6-2
Jamea and Jessica Kirkland are the two brightest futures for American tennis. Jamea made too many errors in her match, just like Sesil. Jamea plays so smooth, she is fast and has a nice serve. I think she is going to continue to move up in the rankings this year and will be pushing top 60 by the end of the year. Jamea would set up the point and then make the error when she had to finish the point. Kristina hits a very clean flat ball and she was just very consistent. She just did not miss and Jamea got very frustrated. Jamea called the trainer when she was 4-1 down in the second set and her uncle said that she was dehydrated. (Her parents and Uncle were crazy during the match, screaming at her “come on J!” the whole time. They were intense.) She did not cramp, like in the past but she was struggling with the heat. She has a big future. Kristina has a chance at beating Gisela, because Gisela has been awful lately but I hope Gisela wins.

Groenefeld def. Schruff 6-4 6-2
Did not see too much, but Groenefeld blasts the ball! She has a big serve and big groundies. Her weakness is her movement, she is not that quick. When she improves that some, her ranking with go up even more. Schruff had to just counterpunch in this match mostly, she could not handle the pace.

Peer def. Domachowska 6-2 2-6 7-5
BEST MATCH OF THE DAY! Shahar would have whipped Marta but she was having trouble with her serve. I love both these girls and it sucks that they had to play each other in the first round. Shahar though is one of my favorites of my favorites so I had to cheer for her. She just dominated Marta in the first set. When they got into rallies Shahar just moved the ball all over the place and never let Marta dictate. She would just hit some awesome angles and the smack a winner down the line. Marta was struggling when she was brought in and had to volley or hit and overhead. Second set, Marta attacked Shahar’s serve which began to give her problems. That was the difference in the second set and Marta picked up her groundies and began to hit some awesome winners. In the third set it was a dog fight. Both girls were struggling with their serves. Marta would take a lead and then Shahar would fight back and then Marta would take a lead and then Shahar would fight back. Then Shahar broke at 3-3 and at game point at 4-3 she hit and ace to go up 5-3 and she screamed two big “come ons!” She was pumped but she lost the next game and then the rain came. When the players got back Marta broke for 5-5 but then Shahar took the next two games with some great winners and she took the match. There were also a lot of questionable line calls in this match. Both girls have a ton of talent. Shahar is top 5 material. All she has to work on is her serve. She has everything else. She has beautiful groundies and she is so quick. I cant even tell you how many points Shahar saved with an awesome get. She also volleys so well. I think she will be top 50 by the end of the year, maybe higher. She will be pushing the big time when that serve improves, for sure. Marta needs to improve her speed and her net game. She has everything else. She could also work on her serve some more, but it is ok, it just will not get her to the top 25. I think Shahar will beat Bartoli. She should win that unless she has a really bad day. Then she could play Serena, most likely on ESPN and a lot of people will be able to see the talent she posses.

Douchevina def. Loit 6-3 6-3
Saw a few points and Douchevina had no problems

Llagostera Vives def. Lee-Waters
Blow out, Vives was to consistent, Lee-Waters, way too many errors

Irvin def. Serna- not sure exact score
Looked like serna was dictating but I guess not.

I saw a lot of great players practicing:
Vaidisova and Kirilenko- Nicole has changed her backhand some and Maria has added some more pace. Both girls just have beautiful games.
Fedak- she hits very hard and she is soooo tiny but she has a bright future if she can harness that game.
Linetskaya- soooo much power and loud. I love her game!
Peer was practicing with Stosur before their matches, Shahar did a lot of stretches before practice
Aloyna Bondarenko was practicing with Katerina Bondarenko- both have very nice, smooth games. I think Katerina has a great future!
Strycova and Koukalova- they were having a great time laughing and having fun in their practice match and Barbora was crushing Klara. I still love Barbora smooth game and think she needs to work on her fitness and just try not to be so negative on court and then she will rise in the rankings
Mauresmo and Myskina- were practicing
Sharapova and Kuznetsova- playing a practice match. Maria was also running on the grass court behind the court where Jamea was playing her match
Nakamura- just did drills not point play
Castano and Granville- Castano was killing Laura in their practice match
Washington and Pratt- were practicing
Hantuchova and Zvonareva- both looked good
Perebiynis- was killing her coach in baseline rallies; the forehand looked good but the backhand was not so good
Molik was practicing
Jidkova- doing a weird practice with her coach standing on the same side and she had to hit the ball to him
Vento-Kabchi was practicing with Sanchez Lorenzo
Parra Santoja was walking around
Craybas was walking around with her coach, Raj
Tanasugarn was walking to practice

Thanks, great report!
Say, in the 2nd set, in the 10+ bp Shahar had, did Marta play great or Shahar missed them?

Thank you for your detailed report! Jamea is still finding her way and is one of my favorites so I appreciate the kind words.

Could you please provide some more info on Katya? I haven't seen her play since August, so I'm interested to know how she is progressing.

Who controlled the rallies? Were there lots of unforced errors?

Thanks

Звонарёва ~ Павлюченкова
Петрова ~ Клейбанова

Thanks for the great report.

I agree about Barbora, she has a great game. But she just gets so down on herself, and her shot selection isn't great either.

I really like her game. She has very nice groundies, can hit winners off both sides. Her movement just needs to improve and she will be right up there with the rest of the up and comers.

Vera did not seem to be feeling well, but Hantuchova was spraying some and Vera was being very agressive. It was pretty even, but Zvonareva would take advantage sometimes just because she has more pace off the ground.
