Hopman players form Discussion

I think we should have a thread where we can keep an eye on how our Hopman Cup players are going on the tour, or how their form has been recently. I know Tomas recently upset Nadal and Roddick in Madrid to reach the Semi's there so he seems to be in good form. I am loving how the other young players are starting to beat Nadal more often, it just shows that he isnt as invincible as we have been led to believe. Rafael is a great player though, no doubt. Dent hasn't played since February so who knows how his form is. Ancic reached the quarters of Tokyo, and the second round in Madrid but lost to Ginepri. Robredo reached the third round of Madrid but lost to Ginepri. Dmitry lost first round to Vliegen in Madrid. Lee reached to Semi's of Tokyo beating Pless, Tursunov, and Robredo but then lost to Henman. He played Moscow but lost first round to Konstantin Kravchuk 46 46. And finally Mark played a singles rubber in the Davis Cup tie against Argentina, losing to Nalbandian 46 36 36. His last tournament was a challenger in Sacramento and he lost first round to Sam Warburg 67(2) 57.

Safarova hasn't played since Bangkok where she lost second round 61 61 to Vania King. Anabel lost first round in Bangkok to Diaz-Oliva 67(4) 63 64. Alicia lost first round to Vania King in Bangkok 61 75, before that she beat Kostanic in Tokyo but then lost to Jackson. Petrova is in terrific form, winning Stuttgart and reaching the Moscow final. Cho last played in March in a $75,000 and lost first round to Dellacqua after having to retire in the third set. Sanja's last events were tier IV's, she played Portoroz, Seoul and Tashkent, losing in the first round of all of them. Venus has only played Luxembourg since Wimbledon. She beat Ivanovic in straights but then lost to Radwanska in straights.

If anyone has information better than mine or if I have mistakes please let me know. Otherwise lets discuss the form of our teams!

nice idea!

as u say, Berdych reached the semis in Madrid and lost yesterday to Gonzalez (though i think part of the reason he lost was the fact that the crowd were really terrible to him)

Tursunov, Ancic and Robredo are all seeds at the St. Petersburg tournament starting on Monday. The latter 2, especially Robredo, have chances to make it to the Masters Cup in Shanghai. Their results in St. Petersburg and Paris the following week will be crucial. I think Mario may just miss out on qualifying, but Robredo is currently 7 and the top 8 go in, so he will most likely go.

Was the reason the crowd were against Berdych just because he beat Nadal. I saw pictures of the "hushing" incident where he supposedly "hushed" the crowd after he beat Nadal. Was there anything else that made them really hate him? Thanks for the info on the St Petersburg tournament.

well yes, they were angry that he beat nadal, but i think it was more to do with the hushing incident. in rafa's press conference, he said berdych was a stupid player and that he should show more respect to the home crowd. so there was a bit of drama for sure...and berdych more than felt the consequences of his acts the following day!! he's playing basel this week, so will be interesting to see how he goes..

somebody sounds a little bitter over the loss..
Although if I beat a home town favourite in straight sets I would want to tell the crowd to shut up too! Especially if they are being extremely vocal in the fact that they want you to lose, I didn't see the match so I'm not saying the Madrid crowd were like this. It certainly will be interesting to see how he goes, hopefully he can keep up the good form so we have some good matches in Perth.
Do you know when some of the female players are playing their next tournaments? I'm checking the draw for Linz now and only Nadia is playing in the singles event. Alicia has teamed up with Anna-Lena Groenefeld for the doubles, that could be a good partnership. She played the qualies for Linz but lost first round to Shvedova. So that's 2 out of 7 players in Linz.
Nadia is again playing in Hasselt next week along with Lucie.
So that's only 3 players who will be playing a tournament before the Hopman Cup starts. What about Cho? Is she still injured? She hasn't played since March and if she can't play in Perth what will happen then? Will they get the next ranked Korean woman to play?

Re: Hopman players form Discussion

Yoon Jeong Cho and Taylor Dent are probably just training and trying to get and keep fit more than anything. The year is shot so they probably won't play anything until the Hopman Cup, which is where they will make their respective returns to the tour. Both have been off the tour for a long time so the Hopman Cup is going to be giving them very valuable match practice for the year ahead. It's a shame that most players see the Hopman Cup as a practice session rather than a tournament that they want to peak for. It devalues the tournament in a way. Marat Safin made it clearly visible that he didn't care about winning or losing when he played Hopman Cup. He just wanted to hit the ball and get back into routine again. His attitude irked Anastasia Myskina a lot. The last match they played together, she refused to speak to him for the entire mixed doubles because he wasn't doing anything that she wanted him to do, and he wasn't giving her anything to work with.

Re: Hopman players form Discussion

Yes i think i remember Anastasia and Marat playing together, it was a little disappointing, they were top seeds but did nothing special, and it wasn't Myskina's fault. Oh well it was still good to see them play together, they made an interesting team, better than this years Russian team, and last years.

Re: Hopman players form Discussion

just thought u might all like to know that Mario Ancic just won the tournament in St. Petersburg. This really helps his chances for qualifying for the Masters Cup. Other Hopman Cup players who were at this tournament (Robredo and Tursunov) both lost first round

Nadia Petrova made the final of Linz, going down in straight sets to top-seeded Maria Sharapova in the final. I guess no one saw that in General Messages.

haha well Robredo's loss doesn't surprise me that much...he was playing on his worst surface against a huge server (Arthurs)

Tursunov also had a pretty tough opponent too (Mirnyi)...although it would have been nice to see him win a match at home

I've already mentioned that Nadia has been in fantastic form, and she's kept it up which is nice to see
It's also awesome to see Mario doing well, if alot of these players find some form quick then the teams at this years Hopman Cup might be alot better than first thought.

Re: Hopman players form Discussion

mario lost to davydenko so this means he can't qualify for Shanghai (unless someone pulls out and he gets in as an alternate)

robredo beat nieminen and is into the semis where he will play davydenko
