ITALY WINS LAST PLACE

Saturday, 29 December, 2001<br /> <br />PERTH, Dec 29 AAP - Italy beat Greece today to clinch the final berth in the Hopman Cup team competition at the Burswood Dome.<br />Davide Sanguinetti overcame Vasilis Mazaraikis 6-1 7-6 to hand Italy a unbeatable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three match, and seal his country's first appearance since 1991 in the mixed event.

Francesca Schiavone earlier cruised past Eleni Daniilidou 6-1 6-2 <img src="frown.gif" border="0"> in just 62 minutes on the indoor court. "It was the first match of the season for me and I was a little nervous," Sanguinetti said.

Italy goes into the round robin Group A for the next stage of the tournament with the US, Belgium and France.<br />Australia's world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt opens action on the first day of the main event on Sunday against defending champion Switzerland, when he takes on Roger Federer. Hewitt will partner Alicia Molik while Federer has linked with Miroslava Vavrinec.
