Teams Announced (Lleyton, Serena in)

Just got this from http://www.tennisaustralia.com.au/

Pretty vague article in that it doesnt list who is actually playing (Im sure we'll get something more solid soon) but its a start.

Hopman Cup lands two No.1's
Tuesday, 15 October, 2002

PERTH, Oct 15 AAP - The $1 million Hopman Cup tournament has landed a coup by attracting both world No.1 ranked tennis players for the first time in its history.

Men's No.1 Lleyton Hewitt will again bypass hometown Adelaide to represent Australia with Alicia Molik in the eight nation, mixed teams event from Dec 28-Jan 4.
And women's world No.1 Serena Williams will play for the United States along with James Blake.

Hewitt's decision to play the Cup for a second year means he will forego the AAPT Championships in Adelaide which is played in the same week.
The 21-year-old scored his breakthrough ATP Tour title victory at the Adelaide tournament as a 16-year-old schoolboy and continued to play it until last summer when he decided to change his schedule in a bid to be fresher going into the Australian Open.

However, his Hopman Cup debut last summer was marred by a bout of chicken pox which continued to affect him as he was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open. Other big names to sign for the Hopman Cup include Hewitt's girlfriend, world No.5 Kim Clijsters of Belgium and No.9 Daniela Hantuchova from the Slovak Republic.

Australia is seeded No.2 behind the Americans, the other countries competing are the Czech Republic, Belgium, Slovak Republic, defending champions Spain, Italy and with the last team in the tournament to be decided between the winner of Paraguay and Uzbekistan.

Tournament director Paul McNamee said: "Serena Williams is raising the bar in women's tennis and it is a real milestone that in the 15th Hopman Cup Serena becomes the 15th No.1 to play. "I've watched James Blake progress through the last two years, he has developed into a formidable player with a fantastic forehand. "Serena and James are part of the new wave of players."

Very surprising qualifying nations, why Paraguay???... btw I would have liked to see Thailand come down.

they always want new teams

but this year it is very weird

Paraquay vs. Uzbekistan

Something was bound to go right sometime today, All these broken pieces fit together to make a perfect picture of us
It got cold and then dark so suddenly and rained, It rained so hard the two of us were the only thing
That we could see for miles and miles
And in the middle of the flood I felt my worth, When you held onto me like I was your little life raft
Please know that you were mine as well
Drops of water hit the ground like God's own tears
And spread out into shapes like Salad bowls and basins and buckets for bailing out the flood

It's sad that Monica isn't playing next year, nevertheless to have the world no. 1 from both tours playing is great publicity for the tournament!
