Unfortunately I have no time or interest to write text accompanying the rankings at the moment. If someone else wants to, go ahead

The files can be downloaded here for a limited amount of time. You can always request me to send the rankings to you, if YouSendIt does not work.

Martina Hingis rose 129 places to reach #82. However, she will have to defend Pattaya City semi final points in a few weeks time.

Yes, with very few points to defend the following weeks, she will almost surely crack the Top 50

This week saw the start of the 2006 season, with a Tier III in Gold Coast and a Tier IV in Auckland. Gold Coast was won by returning Swiss player Martina Hingis, while Auckland was a victory for Daniela Hantuchova, winning her sixth title.

Important changes in the rankings:

Having only played one match before on PYW in Pattaya Hingis had an impressive run in Gold Coast, relaunching her career. Nobody was able to stop her in a fine run, not even popular Czech player Iveta Benesova. Hings rises 129 places from 211 to 82. She will next play Sydney, where she is hoping to climb even more.

Finishing season one as number 49, Suarez had slipped since then, landing at 100. Her last tournament was Wimbledon. Now she finally makes her return landing a quarterfinal by defeating Vera Zvonareva and Shahar Peer. She moves from 100 to 85 in the rankings.

Aiko Nakamura started her year well in Gold Coast by defeating Antonella Serra-Zanetti and Anabel Medina Garrigues, before losing to Iveta Benesova. Her efforts are rewarded though with a jump of 20 places from 117 to 97, landing her in the Top 100.

Highest new entry was New Zealand's Sacha Jones, who had a fine run at Auckland, surving the qualies by defeating Su-Wei Hsieh, Martina Müller and Galina Voskoboeva. In the main draw she won her first round match against Jamea Jackson before falling to Katarina Srebotnik. Her efforts see her enter the rankings at 290.

Player of the Week:

It is hard to pass up Martina Hingis this week as her comeback to win Gold Coast was very impressive. She got the most press coverage on her return as well. Visibly she is very happy being chosen player of the week:

Road to the title:

R32: Maria Vento-Kabchi VEN | 6-1 6-2
R16: Klara Koukalova CZE [7] | 6-1 6-1
QF: Francesca Schiavone ITA [2]| 6-1 6-1
SF: Tatiana Golovin FRA [5] | 6-2 6-4
F: Iveta Benesova | 6-7 7-5 6-1
