Thumbs up PAW (Pick-A-Winner) - FEDERATION CUP QUARTER-FINALS 2004

defending champ: INDIA

PICK-A-WINNER – FEDERATION CUP 2004

THE QUARTER-FINALS

Welcome to Pick-A-Winner (PAW), the Predictions game!

Playing is simple: over the course of the Quarter-Finals of the Federation Cup across 4 different ties choose any 8 matches that are played, including singles and doubles and post who you think will win them.

You should have been selected by your country’s captain to play the QF, remember only countries that advanced to the QF after winning their 1st round ties in April can play here, the losing countries play in the regulation tie (it has it’s own thread done by andrew_uk).

  • This year the tournament will work as a knockout tournament, with countries facing off against each other like in the real Fed Cup, eg Bulgaria vs Argentina in the QF, whoever gains the greatest calculation of scores (see how they work, below) will advance to the Semi-Finals.

Calculation of Scores:

2 player-team: Average points of ALL player's points
3-4 player-team: Average points of ALL player's points, minus one of the player's worst result
5 player team: Average points of ALL player’s points, minus two of the player’s worst result.

QF Tie Results

In Sofia,
BULGARIA (1) defeated Argentina 84.50 to 42.67 pts

In Jakarta,
CANADA (7) defeated Indonesia (4) 102.0 to 101.7 pts

In Adelaide,
GERMANY defeated Australia (3) 86.33 to 63.00 pts

In Milan,
HONG KONG defeated Italy 72.00 to 69.00 pts

Semi-Final betting odds

Bulgaria – Canada: 1.60 - 2.20
Germany – Hong Kong: 1.65 - 1.95

Arrow Scoring Points

Fixtures and Scoring Points

  • Please note the doubles match scoring points will be released when the draw comes out, but however as it is always the 5th rubber this team is subject to change, a good idea is to PAW “COUNTRY #1’s Doubles Team” over “COUNTRY #2’s doubles team.”
  • As you can see, I have listed all the possible singles matches below, when the draw does come out, you should pick the matches according to the draw as your 8 picks. However on day 2, there are a lot of alternatives, so all of you are encouraged to make at least four-eight “Supplementary PAW’s” incase one or more of your PAW’s becomes invalid through a withdraw of a player, or in a case of a dead rubber, a substitute.
  • It is important to note that you are NOT allowed to make a replacement PAW on day 2, you can only add PAW’s to your supplementary PAW’s (and not replace PAW’s or supplementary PAW’s), remember if there is an invalid match in your 8 main picks, your 1st supplementary will act as your PAW8 and so on.
  • The Captain has the power to add supplementary picks to any of their player’s PAW’s, but he/she cannot replace/cancel or rePAW for their players.
  • When the draw does come out, I will bold the match ups that are scheduled, these are the matches you should include in your 8 PAW’s, with the unbolded ones you can include as your 4-8+ supplementary PAW’s.

Arrow Fed Cup Interview

QUESTION:
How is the German camp at doing at the moment?
S-T-E-V-E:
Well, we are having lots of fun on and off court. We just like each other very much and have much respect for each other. We have a great atmosphere in the team.

QUESTION:
How are you enjoying Adelaide?
S-T-E-V-E:
Well...firstly, we hoped that we could play Fed Cup here in Germany, but Adelaide is a great city and the location especially the courts are very nice...good work from Australia Tennis Federation

QUESTION:
So how do you feel about your chances this week?
S-T-E-V-E:
Well...you see that mostly all Australian players are better ranked then us, for example, I'm the lowest ranked player for Germany. But in Fed Cup, everything is possible, so I wouldn't count too much on Australia as there where lots of surprises in the first round of Fed Cup anyway...I hope we can upset Australia and can get a place in the Semifinals.

But as I said, Australia has a great team and will try everything as we do to reach the semis.

QUESTION:
You are formerly known as J.Capriati.Fan, what enticed your name change to S-T-E-V-E?
S-T-E-V-E:
Well, my normal name is "Steve" and "J. Capriati.Fan" was looking more "female" as many people thought I'm female. But I'm male. And I like "Steve" more..

But I'm still a Capriati Fan..

QUESTION:
Did you see her play Baltacha?
MODERATOR:
Let’s stick to PAW Questions
S-T-E-V-E:
Ok

QUESTION:
What do you love about Fed Cup?
S-T-E-V-E:
It's just the atmosphere, you know. It's just a great feeling for me to play for my country, to represent it in another country, here in Australia. It's not like every week, playing one tournament after another to get ranking points - it is team spirit, that counts here

QUESTION:
And how is your team chemistry with crazillo, Carsten, Frongie and matthias?
S-T-E-V-E:
I know all of them very well, especially Crazillo and Matthias. They are probably our Top Players. You remember Crazillo’s great run at the French Open, winning the title. But we really have no problems with each other; we like and respect each other.

QUESTION:
Steve, Fed Cup is expanding all the time with lots of excitement and participation about next year. What is your view on players playing for other countries?
S-T-E-V-E:
Well, I can only speak for myself and it's a pleasure for me to play for Germany. I don't really understand player who come for example from the US to play for, you know, Argentina or something like that. Every Team has enough places left for the players. But it's a decision that everyone must make him/herself. I can't really say much about this situation as it was never a question for me … to play for an other country.

QUESTION:
Sometimes players do this because they are the only sole representative for their country
S-T-E-V-E:
Well, this is a special situation, you know. In this case, I would also prefer to play for my 2# favourite country.

End of Interview.

Interviewers were Andrew_uk and SpikeyAidanm.
