Wednesday Report - Outside Courts

Never ventured to the Centre Court but this is what I made of the rest:

Excellent day for the Japanese girls on Court 1. Obata beat McCain in straight sets although the match was as tight as the score suggests. The American who played a very similar style to her opponent was a little unfortunate not to take the match into a deciding set. Daniilidou had the trainer on after only a handful of points against Morigami. Although she ‘recovered’ well enough to take that first set once Morigami took the initiative it only appeared a matter of time before Daniilidou defaulted. Under the circumstances Morigami did very well to keep her concentration. I feel the attitude of the Japanese players is particularly good in that they seemingly will always go out and produce a consistent performance. Many could learn from this.

Disappointing first match on Court 2. Although winning in straight sets Tanasugarn made fairly hard work of seeing off Craybas. However, she did have some quite serious strapping on her leg so she may have been carrying an injury. The next match went to a third set tie-break with Stosur coming from a set down to beat Sequera. It was probably the Australian’s greater aggression that saw her prevail and she was responsible for the only two serve-volley plays I saw all day! Sequera made some decent passing shots but towards the end her opponent was beginning to read them. Finally on this court I was not at all disappointed to see Golovin trounce the ‘World’s sexiest player’. I could not see any obvious problem that Hantuchova was suffering from other than an inability to hit the ball in court and generally run about. It was sad to see so many people (obviously with little interest in the actual tennis) gathered to see so little. Golovin for her part looked very solid and played some decent wrong-footing shots but in truth she had no opposition.

Possibly the most impressive performance I watched was the defeat of Ruano-Pascal by Jankovic in the opening match on Court 3. She was serving very well (particularly effective on second serve) and hitting very solidly on both wings. If she could move a little better (particularly forwards) she has a strong enough game to threaten the supposedly better players. It will be interesting to see how she gets on against Molik.

Very nice yo hear that. I hope she forgets double-baggel from their last match, and get to quarter-final

NO

Jankovic suffers from severe Chinese syndrome! Only God can help her!
