BERLIN (AP) -- Kim Clijsters' chances of playing in the French Open are in jeopardy after she pulled out of a tuneup tournament Thursday with a recurring left wrist injury.

``I hope I can play the French, I don't know. It's a 50-50 chance,'' Clijsters said at the German Open. ``It's hard to answer that right now.''

The pain in her wrist flared up after she played her first tour match six weeks, struggling past qualifier Marta Marrero 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 Wednesday in the German Open's second round.

Clijsters, the runner-up at the French Open in 2001 and 2003, also played two Fed Cup matches two weeks ago.

The Belgian wore a brace on her left wrist against Marrero, who pounded Clijsters' two-handed backhand throughout the match. Clijsters pulled out of the German Open just hours before a third-round match against Karolina Sprem.

``My hand didn't respond well to yesterday's match -- it's going to need more rest,'' Clijsters said.

She will have new tests on the wrist, which her doctors think has tendinitis.

Clijsters, a former No. 1 still chasing her first Grand Slam title, was the French Open runner-up to Jennifer Capriati three years ago and to Justine Henin-Hardenne last year.

Play at Roland Garros starts May 24.

``It's very frustrating. Especially with a few Grand Slams coming up, it's tough,'' Clijsters said.

She's just one of several top women who have missed significant time on tour with health problems recently. That group includes Henin-Hardenne, Capriati and Serena and Venus Williams.
