Not a bad result considering that this is just her second competitive match since Wimbledon. It's too bad that she and Misa didn't go farther in Cincinnati because that would have helped her to knock off any rust that she's got. Anyway, I'm just glad to see that Lucie is back out there playing again because that's the most important thing at this stage in the game. Once she's able to play regularly, she will get back her rhythm and better results will follow.

Lucie played a very impressive match today! :D She was serving bombs and they were hitting their targets; her big groundies punched holes in Michelle's defence again and again. She even polished things off with a second serve ace... :hearts:

PS: The only bad thing about this performance today was that its victim happened to be another one of my faves.

Lucie is through to the quarters with a 3-set win over Krejcikova! :) She definitely wasn't as sharp today as she was on Tuesday against Larcher De Brito, but she was still good enough to get the job done. This was my first time watching Barbora play, and it was pretty easy to see why she was a top junior. Her game is solid from top to bottom, and she seems really confident in herself, so I think that she'll be in the Top 100 sooner rather than later. That confidence was certainly on display in the 1st set as she took full advantage of a pretty slow start by our girl. Thankfully, however, Lucie was able to pull herself together in the 2nd, and, once she was able to tough that one out, it was smooth sailing in the 3rd.

Next up is probably Venus, and, needless to say, Lucie will have to play some of her best tennis if she is to get through that one with a W, so fingers crossed.

I really wanted to watch this match, but I ended up having to do some unexpected chores instead. Anyway, as long as I can watch the final tomorrow, I'll be a happy camper. :) Mirjana will have to play the singles final against Venus first, so hopefully she will still have something left for the doubles later. Oh, and speaking of Venus, I'd be remiss if I didn't say something about that match last night... Lucie needed to play some great tennis in order to give herself a chance against Venus, and that is exactly what she did. :hearts: She was aggressive from start to finish, and that helped her to control most of the rallies. She kept her 1st serve percentage up -- 67% to be exact -- so Venus had to face lots of bombs. She constantly pressured Venus' second serve. The one thing that I think that she could have done a bit better was with regards to unforced errors because they were what ultimately swung the pendulum in Venus' favor. Yes, Lucie played a really clean match yesterday, but we've seen her play even better ones, so who knows what will happen next time?

On a final note, one thing that really struck me as I watched that match was just how positive and confident Lucie looked throughout. It didn't matter how much of a lead that Venus was able to build because Lucie was never going to let that discourage her. She just didn't seem overawed by Venus at all, and that tells me just how much self-belief that she's got when facing these tougher opponents nowadays. Things are definitely looking up right now. :)

Below is the match report taken from the WTA's website:

The other two quarterfinals took place in the night session, beginning with No.1 seed Venus Williams winning a night-time nail-biter against an extremely in-form Lucie Hradecka, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3).

Hradecka put some impressive power on display - not just her huge serve, which produced seven aces in the match, but also some huge hitting off the ground, her flat, two-fisted groundstrokes painting the lines and corners as she pushed Williams to the limits, even coming within two points of victory with the seven-time Grand Slam champion and former World No.1 serving at 5-6, 0-30 in the third set.

But Williams won five points in a row from 2-3 in the tie-break to seal the deal.

"She really goes for everything. In the end defense helped me a lot," Williams said. "She hits as hard as she can and just goes for it. If she can keep that level up she should be more or less at the top of the rankings. But I'm happy I was able to get those last few points to go my way tonight.

"It was so difficult to beat her though. It was a beautiful performance from her."

Time to return into top 100, it's a joy to see Lucie on indoor court:hearts:
Thanks very much for posting the video, Shifty. :) Anyone notice how many times Lucie smiled during the course of the match? Even when things weren't going her way, she would still find some reason to crack a smile. She is definitely enjoying her tennis at the moment, and that's good to see. :D
