American Lawn Tennis. July 15, 1921 issue.

Summary:

The most exciting match for the women came in the quarterfinals. Hard hitting Molla Mallory has never played her best in England. This match is an exception, as she blitzes fellow American expat Elizabeth Ryan with a blitz of hard drives. A discombobulated Ryan can't get her 'chop and drop' game in gear, and Molla passes her at will when at net. A 6-0 set for Molla has the crowd agog, for only Lenglen beats Ryan like this.

'The American champion, however, eased at the start of the second set, and the lapse was fatal. Her opponet's service cramped her returns, and this opened the way for Miss Ryan, whose famous drop shots now came off repeatedly for numerous points. The California girl went ahead to 5-1, but Mrs Mallory braced, and her backhand passed when Miss Ryan came in on her service restored the balance and she pulled up to 4-5. Miss Ryan then stayed back and drove fierce chops to Mrs Mallory's backhand, taking the game and set. The next set was well contested, but Miss Ryan scored with perfect drop shots in the pinches after getting Mrs Mallory on the run. Miss Ryan's racuet, when she was at the net, seemed to have a hypnotic fascination for Mrs Mallory's returns. Running hard she made a supreme effort, getting back Miss Ryan's chops and drops to make it 4-5, but Miss Ryan's service settled the match, 6-4.' (American Lawn Tennis, pages 211-212)

In the All-Comer's final Ryan's heavily cut "chops" overwhelmed Satterthwaite, who was never able to employ her defensive game at all. The grass surface played right into Bunny Ryan's hands, for she loves the net.

The decisive score of the final led many to hope Ryan could put up a good fight in the Challenge Round versus the holder Suzanne Lenglen, the Maid Marvel of France. Ryan led 2 games to 1, but once Suzanne got used to the court it turned into a complete route. Lenglen reeled off 11 straight games.

In an early round doubles Mrs WM Haughton/Maud Jackson d. Peggy Dransfield/Norah Middleton 6-3 2-6 16-14. The final set was a record for women at this years event.
