Martiniue as Guadeloupe were French colonies, but now they are kind of bailiwicks. They are not independant countries, but they are half independant in the French Republic. It's a little bit like Scottland, Wales or North Ireland in the UK
Martinique and Guadeloupe are French departments. They're 2 of the 5 overseas departments (French Guiana, Reunion and Mayotte too).
Other (groups of) islands also belong to France and are more independent from it, like Caledonia, Polynesia, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, etc.
