Back Injury Knocks Capriati Out Of Indian Wells
A recurrence of the back injury that sidelined Jennifer Capriati for the start of the season has forced the former No. 1 out of this week's Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells.
A year ago, Capriati reached the Pacific Life Open semifinals, falling to Lindsay Davenport, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Fellow American Jill Craybas replaces Capriati in the draw. Capriati is the second top 10 player to withdraw from Indian Wells due to a back injury. Last week, third-ranked Amelie Mauresmo withdrew from the event citing a back injury.
"We are certainly disappointed that Jennifer will not be with us this year," tournament chairman Charlie Pasarell said in a statement. "We know she has many fans who were eager to see her play, and we wish her a speedy recovery and return to court."
The sixth-ranked Capriati initially sustained the injury during the WTA Tour Championships last November. She was sidelined for the first six weeks of the season before returning to tournament tennis in Dubai where she lost her opening match to Eleni Daniilidou.
During a press conference in Dubai, the 27-year-old Capriati conceded her injury was cause for concern during her break from tournament tennis.
"It was kind of serious there for a while," Capriati said. "I thought a couple of times maybe if it's not getting any better, what if I can't come back and play? That thought scared me, but it's a good thing to feel that way, that I still wanted it. I want to decide when it's going to be over, and I wasn't ready for that."
Last week, Capriati scored straight sets victories over Li Ting and Silvia Farina Elia to reach the Qatar Total Open semifinals before succumbing to defending champion Anastasia Myskina.
