Re: Fed Cup 2011

I like our team, very, very much Most of our girls like this surface, so they shouldn't have much problems with the conditions. I hope all (or at least some) of the issues between Mirjana and Goran are put to rest now and it'll be interesting to follow their interaction after some years here (he was also her first serious coach).

One thing I don't like about this format is that there are no more home and away ties, cause it's pretty much "away" for everyone. That takes away some excitement from the compatition, cause honestly, I don't see much interest for the crowd over there, for a match between two foreign players, neither of which is ranked inside 150 in the world Sure there are always some tennis aficionados like those of us on this forum, but generaly speaking...

Our youngsters, Tomljanovic and Njiric, will find this experience very useful, so it's great to see them in the team, and Ajla will probably get to play quite a bit. They could both use any chance to play a serious match against some good and experienced players, so FC is great in that regard.

Jelena Pandzic is surely a great addition to the team, and on a good day she could actually be a solid replacement if something (hope not) was to happen to Tomljanovic.

BTW, are doubles still played in this format? If so, I wouldn't hesitate to match-up Ajla and Mirjana, cause the other two aren't really that good when it comes to doubles. OK, Jelena did have some nice moments in doubles, but I really think these two stand above the others.

Anyway, really looking forward to this!

It would be amazing to see Mirjana and Ajla playing doubles. They should both play more doubles this season and team up for Olympics

IKR!
For the men, Group I and Group II get home and away ties. The women have "neutral" ties which are SO boring

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

ANNA GERASIMOU-EIRINI GEORGATOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER

Re: Fed Cup 2011

Now without Lucic, Martic and Sprem we don't really have big chances.

I'll be happy if we don't get demoted to Group II!

Who knows...she has a lot of points to defend in the upcoming months, so she probably asked captain to excuse her this time.

Re: Fed Cup 2011

I just noticed that the draw came out a couple of days ago. Croatia is in Pool C:

+ Belarus: Victoria Azarenka, Olga Govortsova, Darya Kustova, Tatiana Poutchek, Sergei Teterin (captain)
+ Austria: Sybille Bammer, Yvonne Meusburger, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, Sandra Klemenschits, Jurgen Waber (captain)
+ Croatia: Ajla Tomljanovic, Jelena Pandzic, Ani Mijacika, Silvia Njiric, Goran Prpic (captain)
+ Greece: Eleni Daniilidou, Eirini Georgatou, Anna Gerasimou, Despina Papamichail, George Kalovelonis (captain)

I'm hoping we can beat Greece to avoid the relegation play-off

Re: Fed Cup 2011

^^ Well yes, on paper this seems like a tough pool, but let's not forget this is FED Cup and that having a team captain by one's side can make a whole lot of difference. It'll be interesting to see how our girls do against some of these players.

Don't worry, we'll win the remaining ties easily...

Now seriously, I didn't expect Jelena to win, but I did expect Ajla to do more. It's not bad that they both took a set off of their respective opponents, especially Ajla considering how good Eleni was when at her best, but still... I was hoping for more here. I don't see a way that we even win doubles now against Greece, our team is just not good or experienced enough for that.

So unless we receive some miracle against Austria or Belarus, we can only hope to not fall further down to Group II.

Things are not looking good.
