Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

As of this week Ajla again has doubles ranking. At #724 it's very far from her best ever (379, from exactly a year ago), but once her singles ranking continues to rise she'll probably focus more on doubles too.

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

She'll have to be at her very best in Phoenix, right from the start:

R1: A. Tomljanovic vs. (6) R. Marino

I honestly don't see her winning this. Marino is in an incredible form. She won three consecutive 50k challengers before losing in the semis of the last one (last week in Toronto). Probably Ajla's only hope is hoping her opponent gets tired.

Anyway, good luck

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

She lost 7:6, 3:6, 6:1 As predicted, this match was a bit too much to expect her to win. Still, nice to see her giving it a fight. This probably concludes her 2010, cause I don't see her on any lists for the weeks to come, and honestly there really aren't any serious tournaments in or around the States to play anyway.

Her 2010 year-end ranking is 157, which is a nice jump from 353 of last year and 973 from '08. She's still one of only three girls in the top200 who are born in 1993 (she's the second youngest), and the best ranked of any of them - the others are Diyas and Stephens. She's the only one with a title won this year among those three, but also the one with the least number of wins over top100 players this year, just one (Diyas beat two and Stephens three). She is the one with the most consistent rise up the rankings, each year finishing on a considerably better place than the previous (Diyas '08: -, '09: 206, '10:173; Stephens '08: 496, '09: 802, '10: 198).

The end of the year was less than impressive for Ajla, with her last really good tournament being San Diego, back in early August, but let's hope 2011 starts off much better than that.

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

^^ Yes it will be considerable, but it's not really a huge fall, something like 12-13 spots, so she should stay inside 170. She can earn back the same amount of points (in fact, get even more) by winning just one round of qualies in Melbourne.

well she's gonna have to do more in melbourne just to stay in top 150 because she won Plantation last year. so sad when you see in how much better form was she in first half of the year

It's OK. Let's not be so harsh on Ajla, or so greedy. She's the youngest player in the top 160--can we really expect much more? Besides, she's so young that it's impossible to guess how her career will develop. Next year she could get overwhelmed by the tour pressure and drop out of the top 300, or mature into her game and rocket into the top 50.

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

^^ Yup, 2011 will be very important year for her and I'm very hopeful that it'll be successful. She was clearly much better in the first six months of 2010 than towards the end, but I'm still pleased by her progress.

There are many examples of girls climbing the rankings a bit too fast too early (like Larcher De Britto) and then disappointing a lot of the general public by not meeting hypes and expectations. We sure don't want that to happen with Ajla.

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

Seems like her Puebla points came off today, and it's not too bad - from 155 to 164.

But yes, she'll have to do really well in Melbourne just to defend points from this January, in fact she'll have to qualify to do it. Not only has she won a 25k from qualies, but she also made the quarters in another 25k back in January this year, so that's a total of 65 points, which is exactly how much you get for qualifying for a slam. Hope she starts the season strong.

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

Anyone knows where's Ajla and what her plans are? I don't see her on any of the ITF entry lists and she's also not in either of the two WTA quali draws for the first week Will she even play anything before Melbourne...?

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

she's still so limited cause of the age restrictions that i guess she is going straight to melbourne...hopefully she can get some good practice in before then
can't believe aussie open qualies start in a bit more than a week

ugh, why do they all suck????????

Hope she will play doubles if she can find high ranked partner.

Re: Ajla Tomljanovic thread!

^^ Yeah, it'd be nice to see her play doubles, but I'm not optimistic about that at this point, honestly. Her doulbes ranking is low, and she's not some well-known player generally so that it's easy for her to team-up with some great player for doubles.

Her best chance right now is probably an agreement with one of the Croatians, assuming they have similar schedules. But then we get to the question of who might that be. Martic usually plays with Hercog, Sprem and Lucic are not really into doubles that much these days and the other girls are pretty much all challenger-level regulars. The safest bet would probably be Darija Jurak, and that actually sounds like a good idea, cause Ajla would get to play with quite a good doubles player and maybe win some great matches. But I don't know if Darija's ranking alone would be enough to get them inside some WTA draw (I seriously doubt that, maybe qualies).

So we return to the problem of getting a wild-card. If she'd be some former champ, it would be easy, but being where she is at this moment in her career...

Anyway, great to see her in the FED Cup team again, that's very important for her right now and maybe even serves as a start of some great run on the Tour. Fingers crossed!
