It was actually more of a pun in view of the in my opinion useless category of 'most improved player'.
How do you define which player improved most? Surely Simona improved a whole lot, but what about players like Siniakova or Ozaki?
It's all too fishy for my liking, because improvement is only able to be measured in view of the place or position from which you started.
The award is called WTA's Most Improved Player. If it was called ITF's Most Improved Player I'm pretty sure Siniakova, Ozaki (or Hibino) would have made great candidates. But at this point they play little if anything on the WTA tour. As for the utility of the award itself, I know it's just a silly mention and not the Nobel Prize for World Peace, but as long as it's there I just hope the winner will be the player who deserves it most this year, the one who won 5 WTA titles in 6 months
