Carol Zhao

This thread is dedicated to Pan Am gold medalist Carol Zhao, who is quietly improving and carving out a career on the WTA tour. She had a nice win today in Granby against fifth seeded Zacarias. Next up, Jessica Moore of Australia.

Re: Carol Zhao

She's the third highest ranked Canadian at the moment.

Re: Carol Zhao

She gave an interview on Fan590 last week.
http://pmd.fan590.com/podcasts/aces/...---July-22.mp3

Considering she's a full-time mechanical engineering student, the fact that she's the number 3 Canadian player right now is kind of a sad statement about the health of the rest of the girls.

But seriously Carol is something of a Renaissance woman. Mechanical Engineering student + NCAA tennis at Stanford (probably in the top 3 in the individual ranking. She actually found a way to play over 10 pro tournaments this past year. So she was a T.A. to boot. She also plays 3 musical instruments and sings in two languages (even performs).

Also, no Carol thread is complete without her post match interview at the BoTW WTA tournament in 2014.

Hopefully she can do what she wants in Tennis but she's got a lot going for her when she's done.

Re: Carol Zhao

Wouldn't it be difficult for her to go pro before completing her degree with the interships and all?
Gibbs and Burdette transitioned to the pros quite well (both from Stanford).

She's now the fifth ranked Canadian due to the loss of her Stanford points.
Any news of a possible MD WC or QWC for her next week?

Carol may very well get a MD WC for Toronto. Dabrowski is guaranteed by now and it must be between her, Françoise and Charlotte to take one of the two WCs left. Advantage Zhao due to the tournament being held in her hometown.

Re: Carol Zhao

Nice win against Inoue in Gatineau. She would have played the other (better) Inoue if Inoue hadn't lost to Albanese.

MDWC for Stanford. She drew Mona Barthel.

Re: Carol Zhao

She lost to Glatch today, 6-0, 6-3 without having a break point. I always thought Glatch would have ended up better, but she's never been in the top 100. She's back on track after dropping out of the top 600 in 2014.

Re: Carol Zhao

MD WC for Stanford. Well deserved. 1R against Barthel.

I think she fell off a motor scooter at a tournament and broke both wrists? Title should be hers.

Re: Carol Zhao

Any streams for these matches? Looks like Andreescu is going to make the final!

Re: Carol Zhao

Gatineau doubles final: Zhao/Moore d. Rodriguez/Zacarias 6-3, 6-4. Some consolation after losing in singles earlier in the day. I was getting a little tired of Rodriguez, who had a successful Canadian swing with a lot of wins over Canadians.

Re: Carol Zhao

Stanford did her no favours by scheduling her match against Barthel as the last match of the night session. Hope the time difference doesn't get her so she can put in a decent effort.

Re: Carol Zhao

Such a one sided loss against Barthel. Now she drops out of the top 300.

Re: Carol Zhao

Saved by the rain. She trails 6-1, 5-1, 30-0. Another one-sided match today, this time against Brengle. There's a significant gap between the Canadians and the top 100 at the moment. Hopefully Bouchard or Abanda can prove me wrong in the next few days. The future looks bright with Andreescu, Robillard-Millette and Sebov.
