Second echelon

I'd like to open the thread that would be about discussing our nearest prospects, namely , players who are in the second hundred or around it. Of course, it is not about, say Nadya or Lina, who are there on temporary basis. Neither it is about players ranked very low, below 250-300, because they still have quite a way to go. Lets say, it's about those whom we can already see playing Grand Slams qualifying, so they are already a threat to get noticed and break into Top 100.

As it seems to be right now, we are much better in Top 100 than in the second, which is, I guess, natural. Most of our girls destined to do well, and Top 100 is a final destiny, so that's why most of them are there. But whom can we expect to get there any time soon?

OK, Lina, Nadya will be there within weeks. I am a little bit worried about Nadya probably running out of her protected rankings events, so she'll have to play low tiers soon, which is probably OK. Let's not forget, neither her nor Lina have a title yet.

Zhenya Koulikovskaya is , as usual, balancing on the edge of Top 100. With her unorthodox style of play, it is very difficult to expect her doing any better. What can trick a second 100 player, won't be enough against power of Top 100 player.

Nastya Rodionova seem to get stuck in the Top half of the second hundred. Maybe she will be able to gradually drift a bit higher and become ranked like Zhenya, or Alinka at best. But highly unlikely any better than that - with her physique, she needs to transform herself pretty much Panova-style to have a chance.
Masha Goloviznina - a player I've never seen play. As remarkable as it is, she now seems to be the only amateur in Top 200. What is she doing for living then?
Well, Masha Sharapova will be very soon in Top 100, that is pretty obvious and she seems to be the only our prospect of the second 200 in nearest future..

Other than Maria Sharapova
only other one i got hope for in top 200 is Galina Fokina (but she's a little inconsistent at this very moment)
She's the only top range lefty we have (not counting Zhenya K)
but she's still only 18.

Masha G, agree she hardly plays any events. No idea what else she does.
Masha G, Zhenya K, Nastya Rodionova at best can be like another Alina. A Good run could take them around to #75.

Lina and Nadya not having titles (couldnt do much about it last yr). Lina had only played one Tier IV/V event from the time she was 15 until last October.
they know they both can handle the big tiers and make their way back doing that, but still a title is very nice to have.

Lina and Nadya still have 4 Injury events left.

* Maria Kirilenko is upto #330
Vera D is hoping to play 25K's soon but she's only on the ALT's list on two $25K events in UK (wish i could go but they are around 300km away)

Good luck in 2016 to my favs*Kuznetsova*Sharapova*Kleybanova*Vesnina*Shvedova*Kulichkova*Kasatkina*

How is Maria Goloviznina still an amateur? Isn't she in her early 20's? She isn't playing in college, is she? That's the only way I could see her still being a junior.

Vera Douchevina is not progressing like I thought she would. And unlike Maria Sharapova and Maria Kirilenko, Vera is not playing enough challengers. Maybe it's time she moved to Florida to train in better facilities, train with better weather more suited for tennis and most importantly, have access to all of the challengers in America. I still have high hopes for Vera. But you have to wonder what the gameplan is for her developement.

I am happy with the progress of Maria Kirilenko. But she still has a long way to go. I hope she can finish this year in the top 150, and maybe even the top 100 if she has some good wins on the WTA Tour.

maria k is a bit inconsistent i think. she can play some great tennis but it comes in spells. one week she might win a challenger and the next she'll lose in the 2nd round. i guess the level of the other players is part of it and fatigue. i think with that second round lose she had to qualify for the event so looking at it that way it wasn't as bad toournament.

i am getting impatient with vera i expected her in the top 200 by this stage. i would have thought that with her stellar junior career she would be offered a lot of wildcards in not only challengers but also wta maindraws and qualify draws. is she not applying for WC's or something?

Go the aussies! stosur!!!
and good luck russians: dementieva, safina, kirilenko, sharapova, kuznetsova, bovina, zvonareva, dushevina.

also good luck to: azarenka, lucic, sprem, vakulenko, vaidisova, safarova, ivanovic, groenefeld, mirza, krajicek, kvitkova, larcher de brito, lisicki.

Vera and Masha still got their Junior Exempt placings up their sleeve

2002 top 10 finishers
#1 $75K x3 or lower
#2 $75 x2 plus $50K (Vera)
#3-5 $50K x2 plus 25K (Maria K)
#6-10 $25K x3

Vera had a few placings in qualifying draws of WTA events last year.

Vera should have played Surbiton instead
as she needs some grass matches before Wimbledon qualies.

Clay is the one surface although she likes it, its her least preferred.
Katya B only got in as a LL but now has a tough match vs a Spanish girl who's 17 and ranked 500 on WTA.
Vera's draw isn't the kindest with Marta Fraga in rd 2

Anna T should be ok for a couple of rds
Alisa should make her mark here too but i'd give her 1/4 at best.

Where is Maria Kirilenko? It's strange to see Vera Douchevina still playing the juniors. She is the best junior in the world when she plays. I don't think anyone would doubt that. But I don't really consider her a junior anymore. If she had only played the junior U.S. Open last year she probably would have ended junior #1. And now that the ITF Champions Ball is upon us, I am annoyed that a Russian girl is not receiving her junior world championship trophy at this years Ball. Vera Douchevina, Maria Kirilenko or Maria Sharapova should have been junior world champion last year. But they let Barbora Strycova walk away with the award.

I think Masha Kirilenko is doing the right thing by not playing RG juniors. Besides, I'm sure she is preparing and training hard for the few tournaments she's going to play for the rest of the year.

It is strange time, I must admit. Our top girls are squeezing into top rows, I would not be surprised to see as many as 7 or 8 of our girls in Top 20 soon. At the same time, we have no one ranked 50-100. I do expect Douchevina and Kirilenko to jumpover that zone into Top 50 soon, but that particular zone is pretty much expected to stay Russian-free.

50-100 is going to have Lena B., Lena L., Lina, and Tatiana. Plus Vera and Masha.
And I still have hope that Anna K. will get there this fall.

You've finally realized I'm right about Lena B. I think you're a little harsh on Lina though.

I think there will be 6 Russians, at most, in the Top 20 at the end of the year... Nastya, Elena D, Vera, Nadia (assuming she's coming back soon), Sveta (maybe, I think she'll be close) and Maria (if she keeps playing baby tournies).

Lina and Nadya been hampered by injuries again this yr
Lina with leg strain and other various ailments
Nadya has in reality not played since Gold Coast (Aus Open was a mistake to play)
dont give up on Lena B she'll come good again, just temporary lapse.

Jidkova possibly will finish inside top 100 again.

Chakvetadze & Linetskaya in around top 150 by yr end
Voskoboeva knocking on door of Top 100

Bastrikova Top 250 (hope higher)
Vesnina, Bychkova also around 200 mark.

Kleybanova will be playing some bigger events this yr, she has 3 Junior Exempts (2x50k and 1x25k), hope to see her around 300 mark or higher.

Good luck in 2016 to my favs*Kuznetsova*Sharapova*Kleybanova*Vesnina*Shvedova*Kulichkova*Kasatkina*
