Well-deserved victory was made by Vera. Way to go, Vera!

I love the idea is that now two lovely dangerous Russians Maria Sharapova and Vera Douchevina have beaten the gaint Myriam in 2 junior Grand Slams this year. It makes me feel good knowing that Myriam is beatable against Russians.

I am still very mad at Maria Sharapova (because I love her to death). What was the point Maria decided to play in junior Roland Garros if she had no tournaments (not even one tournament!) to prepare prior junior RG?!? There was no way she could be in the final and win especially in the strong field. It was good to know that Maria is finally back in action but STILL...

She better plays at least one tournament prior junior Wimbledon, otherwise I will shoot myself right through my head! I am sick and tired of waiting for her to play again. Her schedule is way lacking.

Whoa Eggy and CatHat! No catfights regarding Maria and Vera please. It really hurts me to read Maria is better than Vera or Vera is better than Maria. CatHat, please remember that:

*Maria and Vera only met once (it does not mean that Maria is better than Vera when Maria beat her in Aus Open.)
*Vera and Myriam only met once
*Maria Kirilenko and Vera met twice (they are tied)

therefore it's too early to say anything. Maria was a better player on THAT DAY at junior Australian Open when beating Vera. Who knows, Vera could beat Maria many times in the near future. We don't know for sure. They are great players, no doubt. All we know is that we can compare... Myriam is slightly better than Maria because they have met many times. Maria can be very dangerous to Myriam when playing on hard courts. Hardcourt and grass (according to what Maria said.. she loves Wimbledon more than anything) are her favorite surfaces. Clay is her least favorite surface.

I am pretty sure that Vera will be going to junior Canadian Open this summer (she loves hardcourts, so that make sense!), so I can judge for myself by watching her live matches. Then I will be able to tell you what I see, CatHat. There is a far better chance that Vera and Maria Kirilenko will be there and I will be there too. I really doubt Maria Sharapova will be there (it would be really nice if she would be there... I am dreaming and praying very hard!). I have high hopes to see as many as Russian females players competing there. Last year, Vera Z, Dinara Safina and Nina B showed up. Let's hope that Vera D., and two Maria's will show up this year!

Good luck to Vera tomorrow. Vera's run at junior RG reminds me of Maria Sharapova's run at Aus Open.

Well said Sharky! You are like a teacher mediating a debate!

Sharky, I don't think Maria has ever played a grass court tournament. So, who knows how she will play at junior Wimbledon.

But your point about Vera's run at the junior French reminding you of Maria's run at the junior Australian is a great point! You are on a roll, Sharky!

Udachi Vera!

Vera's run has come to an end, but a very impressive week at RG has really put her on the map. I will be keeping an eye out for her! Congrats on a great week, Vera!

Well done Vera! I'm still in shock! I never imagined that she could pound Maria 6-1 6-1!

I hope in Vera D. and Maria S. that Russia has 2 top prospects with killer instincts! They look so sweet, that Vera and Maria having killier instincts is kind of hard to believe! But I hope they do!

Douchevina Wins Girls' Trophy

Henry Wancke

Sunday, July 7, 2002

One could not have expected two Russians to be such complete opposites when it came to playing the game of tennis. In every other respect, the two 15-year-old Girls' Singles finalists with their blonde ponytails could have been sisters. Of the two, the more demure Vera Douchevina emerged a deserved champion, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to go 2-1 ahead in their personal head-to-head.

The match had its points but was spoilt by the continual screeching of Maria Sharapova every time she struck the ball, a trademark of the Bolletieri school of tennis training. While Douchevina got on with the match in a more conventional manner, Sharapova displayed another Bolletieri trait, hitting her ground strokes as if there was no tomorrow.

Neither girl showed any finesse for the game, relying entirely on power, both off the ground and on serve and, inevitably, the Florida-based Sharapova was quickly into her stride powering into a 3-0 lead as she targeted her attack on the Douchevina backhand.

But the Muscovite remained calm, ignoring the constant battering on her eardrums and her racquet, and recovered her break in the fifth game. Although both girls went on swap serves again, Douchevina worked her way back into the match only to lose the set in the 10th game when a net cord helped Sharapova convert a set point.

The second set could not have been more different as the unflustered Douchevina kept to her task. Having soaked up everything that her opponent could throw at her, she took control by introducing more variety to her game, surprising Sharapova with drop shots or passing her. In a short space of time she had deservedly levelled the match at a set-all.

Sharapova then called for the trainer and sat down with her head in her hands, eventually receiving attention to the top of her right thigh. The 10-minute break could well have broken Douchevina's concentration but, on resumption, she picked up where she left off and extended her run of six successive games to 10 as she kept up the pressure with the accuracy of her ground shots.

There was a slight loss of concentration when she dropped serve in the fifth and seventh games of the decider, Sharapova again being helped by a net cord for the latter. These were only slight blemishes to what was an excellent overall performance

Thanks Eggy! Please post that wonderful photo of Vera and Maria elsewhere. Where did you find it?

As big as Vera is, she needs to beef up her serve a little bit. Don't you agree Eggy?

And where are the ace statistics?

there were no Aces hit
Vera was hitting most of her serves out wide, you always get a lower reading out wide. Her serves down middle were few and she missed alot she did try.
