Post Selecting Russian Fed Cup team

OK, my choice, based on what happened at Kremlin Cup will be:
Dementieva, Myskina for singles
Likhovtseva-Kournikova in doubles

Lina K. as 5th number

I don't see why the team would even want Anna, frankly. Last year she lost every one of her singles matches, and all but one of her doubles matches too.

She is their best doubles player in theory, but maybe she doesn't handle the Fed Cup atmosphere well.

People change, Janie. I, personally, think that Anna is a very nice and intelligent person and, and in that aspect she is getting better with every year. I am sure she would want to play in Madrid, because it promises to be a grand event, comparable to Grand Slams in magnitude. And in Moscow, that was difficult for her, she just folded under pressure of all those expectations put on her. She was supposed to be a leader of the team, btu she was not prepared. I think that it may become easier for her to be just a member of a team. It could help her to patch differences with other members of the team. But as far as I see she only has problem talking to Dementieva. And, during the Kremlin Cup, watching it on web cam I saw Tarpishev spending a lot of time near her on all ceremonies. Basically, whether she will be on the team is completely up to her and Tarpishev. Larisa would not mind for sure including her former doubles partner. And Dementieva would not tarnish her own reputation of having greatest commitment to playing for the country because of her problems with Anna.

You are right, being in Moscow last year must have been a tremendous amount of pressure for Anna, the top Russian player at the time. After reading your post, I hope she will choose to play, and will practice with and have fun with the rest of the team. I agree, it would be easier for almost anyone to be a team member and not a leader.

Good luck to the team, whoever plays.

Well, you don't have to worry about Anna playing, because she is not..

She is playing Amanda Coezter in a series of exhibitions in Sth Africa the same week of the fed cup finals.. matches are scheduled for 8th, 10th and 1th November..

Exhibitions are easy to break, ajayares.. It is not a commitment for which they can punish you. And with current political situation one wouldn't need much of an excuse not to fly.. Anna has never missed a Fed Cup ties without a valid excuse. She would not find a valid excuse in playing an exhibition 10000 km away from Europe. If she is selected, she'll play, or she will be at risk of seriously pissing off many people in Russia.

pff, whooo . . . pissing off many people in Russia . . .

. . . may be the way Anna was pissed off by the "fans" last year and this year in Moscow.

It's not that Anna has a good image to secure in Russia anyway - this morons already made their opinion - I still remember that article "Anna, the betrayer", so I guess Anna won't loose any sleep about that.

Losing is inevitable, Defeat impossible !

ALPHA, you think you know Anna well. Well, you probably don't. Maybe Anna really has two faces, but I don't think so. All I've ever read in her interviews says that she values her Russian connection and her image in Russia very much. She is just smarter than you probably think she is. She knows that the behavior of dozen of idiots shouldn't impact her relationship to her country, and that's the way it is. BTW, do you know that in doubles finals in Kremlin Cup , her support group was very strong and at least matched the Dementieva/Lina support group.
Or should I repost the article by Russian captain Shamil Tarpishev published back in July ( and posted on old boards ), named "Anna Kournikova is always ready to help Russian team"? If she'll be selected, I am sure she'll cancel all those meaningless exhibitions ( why didn't she come to South Africa when I was still there after all ) and plays for her country.

As to that "betrayer" article you mention, for you it probably sounds as what every Russian thinks, but I know that it is prtty much opposite, and she knows that too. The person that wrote that article, wrote similar article about Kafelnikov just a month before he won Olympics for his country. It is just another Russian sports crapwriter, who can write any shit, plagiarise if necessary, a man with no honour. I know our Russian media all too well, and I don't have an awful lot of respect to them.

Janie, to be honest, I don't know the precise reason. But at least this is understandable, because she did play a Tour event during the Olympics. So if she was focused on her rankings, that is very valid excuse , IMHO.

To me that sounds like she put her self-interest first. Pete Sampras was continually blasted in the press for prioritizing his ranking over playing for his country.

If Anna had won that tournament in Luxembourg, I guess her choice would have paid off, but to miss the Olympics only to lose in the semis in a Tier 3 event, that looked bad.

Well, you make a very good case ys, however I am 99% sure now that she is playing in SA..
Another article has indicated that she is going to play for sure, the only reason that will stop her is if something unforeseen happened..

I don't think that means FED CUP..
Anyway, perhaps she feels that she is not a part of the team this year, as she did not play in the last tie (even those she was injured)

BTW I have know doubt that she is a very smart young women..

I am sure Anna is not playing Fed Cup. The exhibition matches are now being widely publicized and I'm sure are VERY lucrative.

Even this summer, before she knew how long her injury would last, Anna had signed another lucrative contact to play Team Tennis in the US during the July Fed Cup week, so she obviously had no plans to play Fed Cup then, either. And Team Tennis is not about ranking points, it's only about $$$$$.
