Tatiana Panova scored the upset of the day when she ousted No.8 seed Jelena Jankovic 64 36 75.The former Top 20 players
had met once before with Panova scoring a three-set victory over Jankovic in the second round of the 2005 Australian Open.
Jankovic, who was appearing in Philadelphia for the third time, has had a breakthrough season, reaching Sony Ericsson WTA Tour finals three times, including at Dubai and Birmingham, falling to Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova respectively, both times in tough three-set matches. Panova, formerly one of the best counterpunchers
on the Tour, posted her best result of 2005 at the beginning of the year in Auckland by reaching the quarterfinals. The 29-year-old Russian will move on to the second round where she’ll face Washington for the third time. Panova holds a 2-1 series lead over the American, but Washington won their last meeting 63 63 earlier this year at Birmingham.
