The ASB Tennis Classic has attracted its best ever field, with a number of top 150 players unable to crack the qualifying draw for the Auckland tournament.
Last year players ranked as low as 193 made the qualifying draw but this year the cut-off is much lower.
The strength of the field doesn't surprise top seed Paola Suarez, the world number 14 from Argentina.
She says the players know it is a good tournament and the facilities are really good.
Qualifying for the ASB Classic begins on Saturday, with the tournament proper underway on Monday.
