Hungary vs. Canada
Petra Mandula (HUN) vs. Maureen Drake (CAN)
Going by ranking, you'd expect Petra Mandula to easily win through, but a fiesty Maureen Drake probably won't let that happen. It depends who is more likely to get off to a sluggish start to the year. The surface suits Drake better than it does Mandula, but the indoor conditions would probably suit Mandula better than Drake. I'm picking a resilient Drake to squeak this one out or blow it wide open.
Attila Savolt (HUN) vs. Frank Dancevic (CAN)
Going by rankings, Attila Savolt has the match in his grasp, but the younger Frank Dancevic could be capable of something spectacular. I've never seen Dancevic strike a ball, but if he's been chosen to play the Cup, then chances are he's a hot prospect. On the other hand, Savolt is a steady player who will either win by sheer consistency or lose by lack of a weapon. I would pick a determined Savolt to even the tie if Mandula should falter.
Mandula-Savolt vs. Drake-Dancevic
I pick the experienced Mandula to anchor the Hungarians to a mixed doubles victory. Drake and Dancevic may not have enough doubles prowess between them to stop the more highly-fancied Hungarian outfit.
I'd expect the Hungarians to make the main draw in the outcome, but anything is possible with the unknown quantity that is the Canadians. It should be a close tie, but the winning nation from this tie will then face even stiffer competition during the week. Good luck to both countries.
