Andrew's Rome report

Bepa's official website opened this week!
http://www.verazvonareva.net/

===========================
TELECOM ITALIA MASTERS ROMA (Rome, Italy, WTA Tier I)
===========================

Bepa came to Rome having lost four singles matches in a row, and desperately needing a confidence-boosting victory before the French Open. She also needed to reach the semi-finals - as she did last year - in order not to lose her place in the top ten to Justine Henin-Hardenne. Unfortunately she will lose it to Patty Schnyder instead, who was runner-up at Rome.

---------------------
Detailed calculations
---------------------

Bepa has 2102 ranking-points as of 9th May.

Next week she will lose her 188 points for reaching the semi-finals of Rome 2004.

And she will gain 177 points for her performance at Rome 2005:
135 points for reaching a Tier I semi-final;
23 points for beating #21-ranked Jelena Jankovic;
4 points for beating #95-ranked Catalina Castańo;
15 points for beating #26-ranked Francesca Schiavone.

Bepa's ranking-points as of 16th May = 2102 - 188 + 177 = 2091.

Justine Henin-Hardenne's 2017 ranking-points will remain unchanged, as she didn't play Rome last year or this.

Patty Schnyder has 1882 ranking-points as of 9th May, and will lose 35 points next week, but will gain 313 points for her performance at Rome:
210 points for reaching a Tier I final;
8 points for beating #51-ranked Anna-Lena Grönefeld;
10 points for beating #36-ranked Ana Ivanovic;
10 points for beating #50-ranked Evgenia Linetskaya;
75 points for beating #2-ranked Maria Sharapova.

Schnyder's ranking-points as of 16th May = 1882 - 35 + 313 = 2160.

Second round
------------

+ VERA ZVONARËVA [6] d. Jelena Jankovic, 6-4 6-1

On paper, this looked like another nightmare-draw for Bepa, just when she didn't need it. Jankovic came into the tournament very much on form, and had beaten an on-form Bepa 6-4 6-4 at Linz 2004. Bepa would have to come up with something special to reverse her recent slump.

Following the live scores was an intriguing study in the momentum of a tennis-match: Bepa served for the first set at 5-1 40/15, but nearly choked her lead away as she did at Charleston when Iveta Benešová had taken a wrecking-ball to Bepa's confidence and emotional state.

Bepa was lucky to win the first set - maybe even the match - as Jankovic had two points on serve to level up at 5-5. But Bepa found a way to win that game, and from then on the Force was with her all through the second set.

One healthy statistic for Bepa was that she broke serve 6 times from 9 break-points, while Jankovic only broke 3 times from 5 BPs.

FIRST SET:

Zvonarëv *@ @*@___@ 6
Jankovic __@___@*@_ 4

Match started at 16:24 CEST.

Jankovic serving 2-5: 0/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Bepa serving for first set at 5-3: broken to love.
Jankovic serving 4-5: 15/0, 15/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad J, Deuce #2, ad B (SP #3), Bepa won first set 6-4 at 17:08.

SECOND SET:

Zvonarëv *@* *@* 6
Jankovic ___*___ 1

Bepa serving 0-0: Bepa held after a long game.
Bepa serving 3-1: Bepa held after saving break-points.
Jankovic serving 4-1: Bepa broke after saving game-points.
Bepa serving for the match at 5-1: 40/0 (3 MPs), 40/15, ace.
Bepa won 6-4 6-1 at 17:54.

Third round
-----------

+ VERA ZVONARËVA [6] d. Catalina Castańo [Q], 6-1 5-7 6-2

Started 13:14 CEST.

Bepa led 3-1 when the scoreboard came up.
Bepa serving for the first set at 5-1: 40/0, Bepa won first set 6-1 at 13:43.

SECOND SET:

Zvona _*@__* * *__ 5
Casta *__@* * * *@ 7

Bepa serving 0-1: long tough game to hold serve.
Bepa serving 2-1: broken back after a marathon game in which Bepa squandered several game-points. Had she converted one of them, I am sure we would have seen "Vera Cruz" to an easy victory.
Castańo serving 3-3: Bepa squandered a 0/30 lead.
Castańo serving 4-4: Bepa squandered a break-point at 30/40.
Bepa serving to stay in the second set at 4-5: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Bepa serving to stay in the second set at 5-6: 30/0 -> 30/40 (SP), 40/40, ad C (SP #2), Deuce #2, ad C (SP #3), Castańo won second set 7-5 at 14:52.

THIRD SET:

Zvona _*@* *@* 6
Casta *___*___ 2

Bepa serving 2-1: saved break-point at 30/40.
Castańo serving 2-4: broken to love.
Bepa serving for the match at 5-2: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15 (2 MPs), Bepa won 6-1 5-7 6-2 at 15:30.

Bepa broke 5 times from 8 break-points, but if Castańo had converted more than two of her 10 break-points, what then?

Quarter-finals
--------------

+ VERA ZVONARËVA [6] d. Francesca Schiavone, 7-5 7-6 (7/4)

Started 14:35 CEST.

FIRST SET:

Zvonarëva _@*@___@* *@ 7

Schiavone serving to stay in the first set at 5-6: 15/0, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (SP), 40/40, ad B (SP #2), Bepa won first set 7-5 at 15:34.

SECOND SET:

Zvonarëva *@__* * * *_ 7(7)
Schiavone __@* * * * * 6(4)

Bepa serving 2-0: broken back after 40/30. All games going to deuce so far.
Schiavone serving to stay in the match at 4-5: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Bepa serving 5-5: 40/0, 40/30, held.
Schiavone serving to stay in the match at 5-6: 15/15, 40/15, held
6-6 tiebreak: Bepa *0/0, 0/1*, 1/1*, *2/1, *2/2, 2/3*, 3/3*, *4/3, *5/3, 6/3* (3 MPs), 6/4*, Bepa won 7-5 7-6 (7/4) at 16:41.

Bepa broke 5 times from 8 BPs, while Schiavone broke 4 times from 10. Bepa served 5 aces, but her serve has room for improvement: she got only 50% of first serves in, winning 60% of points when she did so, and 49% on second serve, committing 7 double faults.

Bepa: "It's tough, you know because she had so many people supporting her and in the beginning it hurt me. With the lines, I felt a lot of my balls were going in and the crowd were shouting 'out', 'out', 'out' and I got a little frustrated. But Russian girls are tough."

Bepa on playing Amélie Mauresmo next: "It's always good to earn a chance to turn things around. We usually have tough matches, we've been to three sets a couple of times. I'll have to give it my best."

Bepa also beat Schiavone (6-3 6-3) in the quarter-finals of Rome 2004 before losing to Mauresmo (6-2 6-3) in the semis.
