24-Hour Charleston

=================
FAMILY CIRCLE CUP (Charleston, South Carolina, USA, WTA Tier I)
=================

Second round (after a bye):
- VERA ZVONAREVA [6] lt. Iveta Benešová, 6-4 4-6 7-5

I had been excited by the prospect of Bepa playing the beautiful Iveta Benešová - the clay-loving Czech girl who looks a lot like Daniela Hantuchová.

But I got more than I bargained for, as Bepa turned in the chokingest performance of all her matches whose live scores I have followed (in this case at http://courtcast.ids-emedia.com/fcc_cc.html )

I am very sorry about this result, because it could have a devastating effect on Bepa's confidence and emotional state. I fear that the damage may go well beyond the fact that Bepa is out of Charleston.

If she had to lose to someone ranked around #50, it's some consolation to me that it was Iveta, whom I find superficially very attractive, and who has recently started wearing Golovinesque microshorts - but I'm sure that's no consolation to Bepa!

For Iveta, I hope this is a step on the road to fame and BBC-televisation.

Iveta got an early break for 2-0 at the start of the match, but Bepa broke back, and again for 4-2. Then lost five games in a row, as Iveta took the first set 6-4 and broke for 1-0 in the second.

Bepa broke back, and won a scrappy second set of break and counterbreak 6-4. There were many tight games of 30/30 or deuce throughout the match, and these games seemed to go Iveta's way much more often than not.

In the third set, Bepa broke for 2-0, Iveta for 1-2, Bepa for 3-1 and held for 4-1, Iveta broke for 2-4 and held for 3-4, and Bepa broke for 5-3.

Bepa serving for the match at 5-3: 30/0, 40/30 (match-point), 40/40, ad Bepa (MP #2), Deuce #2, ad Iveta (BP), Deuce #3, ad Bepa (MP #3), Deuce #4, ad Iveta (BP #2), broken

That's right - Bepa squandered three match-points at 5-3. The first two with double faults apparently.

Iveta serving 4-5: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad Iveta, held
Bepa serving 5-5: 40/15 -> 40/40, ad Iveta (BP), Deuce #2, ad Iveta (BP #2), broken
Iveta serving for the match at 6-5: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, Iveta won at 16:53 EDT.

The match featured plenty of winners: 43 by Bepa (4 aces), 42 by Iveta. The website doesn't have unforced-error counts, but Bepa really dug her own grave with 9 double faults, losing her serve 10 times in the match (she broke Iveta 9 times).

Bepa's serve - so often the barometer of her form this year - let her down again as she won only 56% of points when she got her first serve in, 44% when she didn't (Iveta 71%, 50%).

And I do believe Charleston is another of the very hot climates in which Bepa has struggled this year. Roll on the red clay of Europe!

First round:
- Vera Zvonareva/Tatiana Golovin lt. SHINOBU ASAGOE/KATARINA SREBOTNIK [6], 6-2 6-2

I was so excited when I saw Bepa and Tati together in the doubles draw! The glamour of Tatiana, with her microshorts and her sexy grunt, combined with Bepa's understated beauty and flairsome talent, would surely make a delightful sensory feast for those lucky enough to see and hear it.

I'm Worried

Hi Andrew,

I'm worried about Bepa's form at the moment. I sincerely hope she hasn't lost interest I really hope she doesn't do a Jelena Dokic (who also had bags of promise) and slip away completely. I would miss Bepa far too much I wish her all the best for the Red clay season and hope to see her at Roland Garros. I will always support her through thick and thin

I am quite sure that Bepa has not lost interest. If anything, she cares too much about her tennis (see the Vera Zvonareva rise to the top thread !!!!, p.172).

I really hope there's a way back for Jelena Dokic. She's only just turned 22, and is way too talented not to reverse the slump that has seen her drop out of the top 300.
