Was 2002 a good year for Asians??

well Tanasugarn is dropping in the ranking, Tulyaganova too Sugiyama is hanging in there, Widjaja lost a lot of points and end up in the 90's(not including Pattaya though)

but we have Cho, Asagoe, Widjaja in the top 100. Lee/Prakusya and Sugiyama/Fujiwara in the final championship... but in general, is it a good or bad year for Asian players??

Good for some players, not the others (very obvious answer)

Very good results: Cho (definitely), Paradorn (no doubt), Ai/Fujiwara
Good results: Sugiyama, Widjaja, Morigami, Prakusya/Lee, Asagoe
Not really improving: Tulyaganova, Prakusya, Tanasugarn, Jeon
Bad year: Hsieh (definitely), Lee (both Janet and Hyung Taik)

=Good luck to my favourite players: Mirjana Lucic, Elena Dementieva, Li Na, Maria Kirilenko, Daniela Hantuchova, Vera Zvonareva, Zheng Jie, Venus Williams =

Mi-Ra Jeon started the year ranked #249 and is now #137. That is not too bad actually, is it .

She has also participated for the first time in many years to Grand Slam event and even qualified for the main draw at the US Open.

I would therefore rather say that this year has been good for her .

I guess we do not have the same definition of good and average then .

I consider it a good year in view of the progress she has made.

Maybe you call it average given Mi-Ra potential .

2002 has been Mi-Ra's best year.

Of course, it generally depends on which player in response to the topic question.

I didn't mean to say Mi Ra doesn't have a good result, my definition of "not really improving" really means that I think those players could have gained a better results than they did now. Eg. Tammy, I think has a potential to win her first title this year, but she didn't (hopefully next year), Prakusya (we know she doesn't has a good year, and I hope she could do better than that)...... Tulyaganova (not as good as last year), and Mi Ra, although her ranking had been improving a lot, but considering her potential and she didn't has a lot of points to defend this year, I really expect her to reach at least Top 110 this year....

But again, we all have our own opinions, and really, I hope Mi Ra and all Asian players will have a better results next year.

My wishes next year:
* Tammy and Wynne won their first title in 2003.
* Cho, Angie, Ai could maintain or improve their performance (by defending all their points this year)
* Mi Ra to be Top 80 player.
* Paradorn to be Top 10 player.
* Janet & Hsieh for best results
* Chinese players to participate more on WTA Tour.
* One of Asian female players (Iroda, Tammy, or Ai) could become Top 10 player

Mi-Ra will still be playing a couple of tournaments this year . The season is not over yet .

She has also SF points at the Queen's Cup ($25K) to defend .

i think it's fair year for Asian in WTA tour.

Unfortunate that Tammy didn't play well in the 2nd half of the year compared with the first half that made she craked the top 20 for the first time.

Ai is consistant in the tour, not so well but not too bad. Iroda had a big drop this year. In general, Asians player had done better in double.

Thanks for the correction Luke. Should not have trusted Stphanie on Mi-Ra performance at the Queen's Cup and checked by myself .

Thanks for the support for Mi-ra!

Next year will be very important for her,.... she's improved her ranking to enter low Tier event's qualy,...so let's see how she's doing in WTA tour events next year.

This year, Mi-ra had some good memories ( first challenger victory, some good result from challengers in April and May, US open maindraw) and bad memories ( critics from AG game loss with cramping along with teammate YJ Cho ( both cramped when they were leading in 3rd set ), some injuries, critics from SF in Seoul, some bad scheduling to her...etc ).
Recent good run of YJ Cho, her lone teammate, would be big pressure as well as motivation.

Anyway,.. Go, Mi-ra!

Talking or Yoon-Jeong, I read that she had had a knee injury right at the beginning of her match against Angelique Widjaja.

Eric, have you read recently any news about her condition? Knee injuries can be very bad and take a lot of time to heal .
