Re: AKGUL! The Gentle Giant's Wildly Enthusiastic Fan Zone

Beijing Olympics:

(9)Zvonareva vs. Yan
Cirstea vs. Peer
Amanmuradova vs. Schiavone
(8)Radwanska vs. Chan

Tough draw, I don't really see Akgul going very far. It should still be an incredible experience for her. Have fun and enjoy your first, and hopefully not last, Olympic Games.

2016 Titles:
Tennis Tipping: (S) ITF Toronto | (D) Dalian (w/ Nottheone), ITF Bendigo (w/ Randy)
Suicide: Strasbourg, Tashkent, Hong Kong

Re: AKGUL! The Gentle Giant's Wildly Enthusiastic Fan Zone

It was so amazing to see our Akgul on national tv today! When I started paying attention to her name in the Asian challengers, I never, ever would have imagined that before too long I'd be watching her play on Arthur Ashe stadium in the US Open main draw. What an incredible journey. And she didn't embarrass herself out there, either; she showed she belongs in the top 100. Yes, there are things she needs to work on in her game, but she knows, and we know, that she's a work in progress. But I am just so proud of our Akgul for how far she has come!

And I hope the next time we see her on tv playing in a Slam, she'll get the win. You can do it, kid! We believe in you.

Akgul's in the doubles draw, playing with Darya Kustova. They play tomorrow on Court 14. Unfortunately, they drew the 7th seeds, the Bondarenko sisters, so it's going to be a tough one. Good luck, Akgul!

She's not playing Mixed, unfortunately.

Akgul's in Bali! She easily won her first match against Indonesian qualifier Ayu Fani Damayanti, 62 61. But 5th seed Franny Schiavone will be a much tougher challenge in round 2.

In doubles, Akgul's playing with Yaroslava Shvedova. They're seeded 4th and start their campaign against the WC team of Paszek and Czink; sounds like it could be a fun match.

Quite a tough first round match, but I am confident Akgul can come away with the victory.

Akgul, please crush Urszula. No, don't crush her, beat her deftly and smoothly.

Re: AKGUL! The Gentle Giant's Wildly Enthusiastic Fan Zone

Akgul (Seed 7/77)
R32: lost to Urszula Radwanska (POL/126) (5)6-7 3-6

>>> Amanmuradova, 24, runner-up at this event three years ago, and local favorite, blamed herself for the 7-6(7-5), 6-3 loss to the seventeen year old Urzula Radwanska of Poland. I am frank in telling you that I could not handle the pressure of my country people , I had my chances at 3-1 in the tiebreaker, but could not take it , I am angry at myself and at this level it is a crime to lose advantage , she said later.

But for the young Radwanska, who lost in the second round to Serena Williams at this year Wimbledon, it was nice feeling to account for country star in her background.

“It is always difficult to play a star in the country, I have watched Akgul playing my older sister Agnieszka in Rome earlier and I had made a plan to play her , she said. Radwanska Jr. added Akgul serve was very tough, but breaking her in the very first game made it easier for her to handle it for the rest of the match. <<< From: http://www.tashkentopen.uz/

I was worried she might blame me, after I told her Radwanska would be easy, having been beaten 3 & 3 by Laura Robson, only last week. Oops

There’s a longer Akgul interview here: http://www.tennis.uz/ ..she says she's exhausted, which was no doubt a factor here.

Dubs: Akgul & Olga Govortsova (Seed 4)

Thanks for the article and the link, Mike! Unfortunately I didn't see your post until now, and now that Uzbekistan Tennis page is filled with ATP player interviews. The Akgul interview must be on the site somewhere, but I haven't tracked it down yet.

Meanwhile, Akgul has gone back to her Challenger roots this week. Instead of playing in Linz or Luxembourg, she has opted to play the 100K in Poitiers, France, where she's the 4th seed. In the first round she rebounded from a slow start to get past Ekaterina Ivanova of Russia, 36 64 61.

Akgul's ranking has now fallen to 78 from a high of 50, but that doesn't bother me at all. I'm focusing on the fact that she's been able to firmly established herself in the top 100, which is not so easy because suddenly you're playing better tournaments, facing opponents of a much higher caliber than before. Not every player can manage to make that transition but Akgul has done it pretty well, I think. Now I just hope she can end the season on a positive note, get some much-needed REST, and then come back refreshed and eager in 2009.

Unhappy Re: AKGUL! The Gentle Giant's Wildly Enthusiastic Fan Zone

Akgul lost to Julie Coin today 67(2) 06. Poor kid, she must be exhausted. Go home and rest up, Akgul! Come back strong in Australia.
