As per the match report in Sports-India, Sania was sick with some fever, which is why she didn't do well in the first set. Actually she was trailing 5-0 in that set but regrouped and played some very attacking tennis from then on- she wanted to finish the match as soon as possible because of her fever. Hope she can give a good fight to Hingis in the 2nd round.

I read a report on sports-india.com and it seems she is back to how she used to play. a lot of attack. but now she is fitter and technically sound. she also has added some strategy in her game. so she is now dangerous and confident. i hope its a hint for better to come.

That was exactly what I was excited about, despite her bad loss to martina. I caught a bit of her matches, and I was just astonished at the improvement in anticipation footwork and movement. I think it paid off today.
And thats the wierd part. Footwork is one of the hardest areas to improve in and it takes a long time. Usually the results only really show after months to years of work. But this was just amazing. At the USO she looked flat-footed and sluggish, but suddenly she was using her feet the way roger does. Its very unusual. Fitness, and court sense does not improve so visibly in two weeks.
Theres only one way she could have improved so fast, and if that is really the case I don't think we need to worry about her any more. There is one problem though. Early on I really struggled to maintain the concentration levels needed to time the ball perfectly, and I often lapsed into my old mediocre self. I think she'll struggle to maintain that level of concentration on the court, but she'll get there soon. She's always had good footwork, but she does seem to be half asleep on court, which is why she hasn't got the best out of it thus far.

Funnily enough these were the exact words I used a mere fortnight ago. Coincidence? Not really...

About the movement she does seem to be a bit of a dreamer on court at times. Its actually possible to show huge improvements in your court coverage, and in fact raw speed through improved concentration. I haven't done a single footwork, or fitness drill, but i'm faster than I was two weeks ago. When your awareness improves, you seem to have all the time in the world.

Well hopefully this is just a beginning of good things that are in the future for us.. It has been a longg road of learning for her and it was har way for her!! When I saw her playing, she wasnt hitting hard and was trying to be patient, not knowing when to go for it and when not! Many times making right decision and many times wrong!! Now that shes gained her confidence and is quicker, she can make a lot of those monster forehands and Backhands she should be hitting while in good position! And she did this today to hingis, one of the best defensive players on tour! Apparantly, Hingis was brought to knees by Sanias power and she needed few MPs and had to save few BPs in the last game anyways finally she pulled off a good victory!! After all year of coming close to upsets and not be able to make them..Cant expect too dramatic turnaround but this should give her some confidence to start winning some more matches now..Hope she keeps up play at Seoul..This is prolly her best victory ever!!

Virginia Ruano pasucal next up..One more retriever!! Lets see if Sania has matured enough to beat 2 of them in a row!!
