Welcome to the Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players. While this is very much a work in progress, we intend to create an A to Z Encyclopedia of women who have played competitive tennis.

Finding players:

Players are listed from A to Z alphabetically by last name. Thus Daphne Akhurst will be listed alphabetically under "Akhurst".

Daphne also played under her married name of Cozens. Cozens will be redirected to look under "Akhurst".

Example of the entry for Akhurst:

AKHURST, Daphne Jessie (Australia) [22 April 1903-9 Jan 1933] [Mrs. Royston Stuckey Cozens, from 26 Feb 1930] [Active 1919-31]

Last Name, First and Middle names. (Country) [Date of Birth-Date of Death] [other identities] [Years active]

Finding more biographical details, links, and pictures:

Notice the underlined name here: AKHURST, Daphne Jessie. Clicking on the name will work as a hyperlink, and will take you to a fuller biography.

I have been updating and editing the Grand Slam results recently, working on the French. I have had amazing success in locating first names and other info using this tool that LKK has put together for us with help from so many of you. When looking for names in the Slam results I am finding over 90 to 95% of names.

Slowly but surely we keep on building. Thanks for all the hard work all! :)

Lucas, Emily Muriel
United Kingdom
Born 1878 in Saint Nicholas, Devon
Died January 19, 1962, in Dawlish, Devon

Married George Frederick King Adams circa September 1911 in Newton Abbott, Devon

Although she took part in some lawn tennis tournaments in the years circa 1904-12, Emily Muriel Lucas (popularly known as Muriel) is best remembered as a badminton player. She won many titles in the latter sport, including the women's singles title at the All England Badminton Championships in 1902.

Muriel Lucas also won the women's doubles title at the All England Badminton Championships no less than ten times in the years 1899-1910. Four of these titles were won with Ethel Thomson (later Larcombe), a future winner of the women's singles title at Wimbledon. After her marriage in 1911, Muriel (Lucas) Adams did not take part in any more singles tournaments.

Margaret Rivers Larminie
United Kingdom
Born 1886 in Jamaica, West Indies
Died March 31, 1964

Married Robert Clayton Tragett on May 22, 1911 in Saint George's Church, Hanover Square, London; later divorced

Like Muriel Lucas and a number of other early sportswomen, Margaret Larminie was proficient at more than one sport, in her case lawn tennis and badminton. She had by far her greatest successes at the latter sport, winning the women's singles title at the All England Badminton Championships in 1911 and 1912 and, for the third and last time, sixteen years later in 1928.

In those days badminton tournaments were usually held during the winter and, because lawn tennis tournaments were then mostly held during the spring and summer months, players who took part in both types of tournament would change their rackets accordingly.

Margaret Larminie was also a talented writer and had three popular novels published under her maiden name: "Search", "Echo" and "Deep Rivers". Her husband, Robert Tragett, remarried in 1934, so he and Margaret divorced at some point.

Note I need to add prior entires.

Mystery #1 Mrs L.S. Coe

1. IMO she is NOT Gertrude Ransom Hart for the following reasons:
  • There is no evidence GRH ever played tennis.
  • Louis Summer Coe lived in Connecticut, and not New Jersey, where Louis S. Coe was a prominent citizen in the town of Englewood.
  • Looking at Find a Grave, Louis Summer Coe's father was not Captain P Coe-the father of the tennis playing Louis S Coe of Englewood.
It should be noted that all the New York Times records and old books about Englwood New Jersey firmly place Louis S Coe in Englewood, New Jersey from the 1890s until at least 1910. Thus any person who is a candidate for the L.S. Coe in question needs ties with Englewood.

I still maintain that Ann (or Annie) Burdette, is the woman in question. She is listed by Bud Collins as Mrs L.S. Coe and was from the Englwood area.

I will recheck ancestry records to try and find more.

NEWBERRY, JANET (Janet Scott Newberry)
United States
Born 6 August 1953 in Los Angeles

Married (1) Francis Irvin "Frank" Wright on 28 July 1981 in Greenwich, New York. He died in 1991.
Married (2) Ralph Elliott Howe on 12 August 1997 in Saint Petersburg, Florida

According to the "Wimbledon Compendium", Janet Newberry married for the second time in 1997.

I've put some spaces between the information above so that it doesn't look so jammed together and is easier to read. I don't know why the first line reads "NEWBERRY, JANET (Janet Scott Newberry)" instead of just "NEWBERRY, JANET SCOTT".
