MOSCOW, Sept 24 (Reuters) - The top two seeds, Americans Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams, have pulled out of the Kremlin Cup, tournament organisers said on Wednesday.
Davenport, ranked number four in the world, has been nursing a painful foot injury for the last few months, while sixth-ranked Williams has been troubled by a lingering stomach muscle injury, which forced her to miss the U.S. Open.
Williams is also mourning the death of her elder sister Yetunde Price, who was fatally shot in a suburb of Los Angeles earlier this month.
"We certainly understand their motives," said Kremlin Cup director Alexei Selivanenko.
World number seven Amelie Mauresmo of France is now the top seed in the $1.3 million WTA tournament.
The Kremlin Cup starts in Moscow on Monday
