How will the Italian Ladies fare at this year's Open?

Any thoughts on the following matchups and how far they might go?

Silvia Farina Elia ITA (21) vs. (Q)Maria Emelia Salerni ARG (161)
Francesca Schiavone ITA (29) vs. Eva Vislova SVK (99)
Rita Grande ITA (64) vs. Tamarine Tanasugarn THA (42)
Flavia Penetta ITA (58) vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (27)
Antonella Serra Zanetti ITA (85) vs. Stephanie Foretz FRA (80)
Maria Elena Camein ITA (96) vs. Daja Bedanova CZE (88)
(Q)Adriana Serra Zanetti ITA (110) vs. Denisa Chladkova CZE (41)
Tathiana Garbin ITA (109) vs. (Q) Mara Santangelo ITA (127)

Both Silvia and Francesca made it to the final 16 last year and I'm hoping for a repeat performance. With the draw opened up as a result of Venus' withdrawal they could actually face each other in the fourth round this year - at least I'm hoping.

As for the others it looks precarious but I'm hoping for the best.

Also, anyone know why Roberta Vinci wasn't here for qualies? Is she injured? Eggy, are you there?

Farina will make the quarters...
Schiavone will make r3...
Grande will make r2...
Camerin will make r2...
Santangelo will make r2...
all the others will lose in r1.

9 Italians in the draw - I'm impressed

I hope Francesca will not met Eleni!
Because Francesca always defeats her

You can see in my site the "Head to Head", Francesca leads 4-0, she is Eleni´s nemesis

Good luck per tutti bambini!

Coming from a country that has zero players in the draw you just have to admire 8 Italians getting there.

Now if Francesca is OK and doesn't look at her draw and get too excited.....

Ed

Here are my thoughts on how they will go...please remember I suck at predictions, but I just want to say how great it is to see so many Italian women in the draw!

Silvia Farina Elia ITA (21) vs. (Q)Maria Emelia Salerni ARG (161)
Silvia should win this. I like Pitu a lot, but she's way too unreliable. Hopefully Silvia gets through...but sorry Ed if all goes to plan I hope it ends in round 2

Francesca Schiavone ITA (29) vs. Eva Vislova SVK (99)
You mean Fislova? She who beat Iva 6-0 6-1 a few months ago Bitch I think Francesca will beat her in straight.

Rita Grande ITA (64) vs. Tamarine Tanasugarn THA (42)

Anyone's guess. Both are dangerous floaters...hmmm, I'll go with Rita in 3.

Flavia Penetta ITA (58) vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (27)
Flavia is adorable and a newbie on my faves list, but I love Sveta to bits and think she'll win in 2 (hopefully)

Antonella Serra Zanetti ITA (85) vs. Stephanie Foretz FRA (80)
Lucky break for both! This is a toss up...both not playing the best...hmmm, I'll go with Stephanie in 3 sets.

Maria Elena Camein ITA (96) vs. Daja Bedanova CZE (88)
Daja She will drop out of the top 100 soon. I think she'll get through this match but lose next round probably.

(Q)Adriana Serra Zanetti ITA (110) vs. Denisa Chladkova CZE (41)
Denisa should be too strong for Adriana....an upset is not out of the question though.

Tathiana Garbin ITA (109) vs. (Q) Mara Santangelo ITA (127)

I'll go with Tax in 3.

I think at least 4 will get through...capable of getting many more through though

one to Francesca - early breaks both sets against fighting opponent, by the scoreboard she took it up a gear in the second, had a bad service game when 4-1 in the second but closed it out on her serve.

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

To laugh oftern and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children;
to earn the appriciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appriciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived.
This is to have succeeded.
