It's pretty dire once you sink below #75. Doesn't take much these days.

Re: Grand Slam debutantes since the 2005 US Open

Friedsam in ob Ranking.
Kovinic/Smitkova match in Q3 secures another debutant. Zanevska could do it tomorrow as well.

Other ones include:
Kontaveit/Dabrowski
Kozlova
Buyukakcay - wonder when/if she will ever do it.
Hozumi
Siegemund
Shapatava/Georges
Ramialison
Kiick
Vasylyeva

Actually the winner of Kovinic/Smitkova could be the only one. Not all that exciting really.

Rest in Peace Bally!

Grace Min was not a QWC to last year's RG like it says

Serena (23) & Venus (7)

Kovinic and Zanevska are through already.

The remaining candidates by what I feel (Although they could all lose):
1.Kiick - MLdB is quite vulnerable on clay
2.Kontaveit - Heather is apparently injured, but Anett's scorelines didn't look promising.
3.Shapatava - Have hardly seen her play.
4.Buyukakcay/Siegemund -They both have pretty slim chances I would reckon. Cagla and Laura are probably dead after their marathons

Rest in Peace Bally!

Re: Grand Slam debutantes since the 2005 US Open

Rumor is that Shapatava was the last player in the Q draw, after Azarenka w/d and Friedsam moved into the main draw.

Re: Grand Slam debutantes since the 2005 US Open

Time for this year's English Open debutantes.

Nobody in on ranking as is almost inevitable. No debutantes among the MD WC recipients.

Waiting for the results of qualies, some of which have been deliciously random (as opposed to just plain random and pointless, which is what you often get at USO qualies) so far.

Re: Grand Slam debutantes since the 2005 US Open

We are left with:
Smitkova (vs Brengle)
Cepede Royg (vs Bacsinszky)
Kozlova (vs Larcher de Brito)
Kania (vs Rogers)
Vogt (vs Konjuh)
Jabeur (vs Paszek)
Kontaveit (vs Barty)
Mitu (vs Falconi)

Potentially they could all lose.
I think Kania, Kontaveit & Mitu could pull through.

Rest in Peace Bally!

All I needed to do was to check the OP to see that this isn't true. It just happens less often than at RG or the AO due to the gap of time between the closing of the MD entry lists for RG and the English Open being so short, but players who have good results immediately before RG (but after the MD list for it is done) may find themselves in this situation. Re: Grand Slam debutantes since the 2005 US Open

Cepede Royg (whatever that is), Kozlova and Vogt out.

Smitkova already through

Mitu was very close, but is still alive in the third.

Re: Grand Slam debutantes since the 2005 US Open

Paszek vs Jabeur was surprisingly tight, but Jabeur out in the end. Mitu qualifies. Kania and Kontaveit playing at the moment.
