Molik's revenge on Davenport

AUSTRALIA'S Alicia Molik delighted the home crowd by winning her first Grand Slam title in the Australian Open on an emotional day for both her and beaten finalist Corina Morariu.

Molik teamed up with Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova to defeat American duo Lindsay Davenport and Morariu in straight sets in the women's doubles final in Melbourne.

Molik, defeated by Davenport in the quarter-finals of the singles, gained revenge with a 6-3, 6-4 win on Rod Laver Arena.

In 2001, Davenport and Morariu lost the 2001 doubles final to the Williams sisters but that was put into perspective when Morariu was diagnosed with acute leukemia a few months later.

Molik, Morariu and Davenport were in tears after yesterday's final.

'It was a really special day,' said Morariu.

'It's been a long three-and-a-half years for me. I'm just really lucky to be playing again and playing a Grand Slam final is an added bonus.

'It would have been great to come out with a win today but I'm pretty proud of the effort I put in the last few years to get to a final with the help of someone like Lindsay.

'The last time I got out of the hospital in November 2001 I couldn't walk 20 yards. To think that I would be able to play tennis again, let alone play at this level, seemed like a really tall mountain to climb.

'It still bothers me to lose and I still get frustrated. But I have let myself accept the fact that I'm still competitive and want to do well. But I have the luxury of looking back to what I was doing three-and-a-half years ago, lying in a hospital bed fighting for my life.'

Was Alicia really in tears? I thought it was just Davenport and Corina that were getting emotional?

PS The australian open website has put the wrong transcript up for Sveta/Alicia's post-match interview. They put Lindsay/Corina's there instead. I 'informed' them but they haven't changed it yet

i've seen the match and no alicia wasn't in tears. she was just consoling corina but she did looked like she was touched by the whole thing.

about the OZ site's boo-boo. i've noticed that too, they posted corina/lindsay's interview twice. that's such a silly mistake.
