<br />ELS CALLENS, more noted for her doubles play than her singles, staged a dramatic comeback to win the LTA Challenger women's single final at the new £60 million Bolton Arena.
Callens, 31, who later flew out to join her team colleagues for Belgium's Federation Cup match against Spain in Madrid, beat the Moroccan Bahia Mouhtassine 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a match lasting one hour 35 minutes.
The tall Belgian was given an early shock when she lost the first set and in the early stages certainly seemed slower to react than her more diminutive opponent. Mouhtassine's punchy baseline play disturbed Callens, who dropped her service in the opening game in the first set.
She briefly hit back by breaking her opponents in the eighth game, only to again lose the initiative. She had to bring all her experience into play to move the pace up a gear at the start of the second set, and it immediately paid off when she broke the Moroccan girl's service in the opening game.
Callens, who recently won the German Open doubles final and was a finalist at Waikoloa, was now in dominant mood and finished the match in impressive full flow, moving quickly into a 5-0 lead before taking the final set 6-1.
There was some consolation for the young Moroccan, who along with her Russian partner, Maria Goloviznina, beat the Yugoslav pair of Sandra Nacuk and Dragana Zaric 6-4, 6-3 to triumph in the final of the women's doubles.
