Squirrels actually have a very keen sense of smell which they use both to locate buried acorns/nuts and to determine whether said food has been compromised or is that's really a terrible analogy any way you look at it.

Sorry for the zoological smack talk, but though a blind squirrel might not survive predators for long, it would have no trouble finding an acorn!
