ITF WOMEN'S CIRCUIT (Gorizia, Italy; clay; ITF $25k)
1q + MICHAELA JOHANSSON , 1-6 7-5 6-4
2q v Giulia Gatto-Monticone (Sunday)
(There are three qualifying-rounds for this tournament.)
It's Jelena's first match since April (when she lost to Eleonora Punzo at ITF Biarritz), and her first win since August 2005 (unless you count the Australian Open wild-card play-off last December, where Jelena beat four lowly-ranked Australians).
I must admit, I thought that Jelena had simply forgotten to pull out of the tournament when I saw her name in the draw! Because she already withdrew from ITF Zagreb (also the week of 12th June), and the tournament-organisers (spearheaded by Iva Majoli) were quoted as saying:
"Our newest source says that Jelena Dokic thanked us for the Wild Card, but she is unfortunately not ready yet to play tournaments after all."
But according to Jelena Dokic LiVE
, "Jelena decided not to use special invitation for Zagreb because one tennis player can get only six wild cards per year (which will be more important for her in the second part of 2006)."
It looks like Jelena is planning another tour of Italy instead. She has also withdrawn from the following tournaments:
* ITF Prostejov (week of 5th June - withdrew 22nd May)
* ITF Grado (week of 5th June - withdrew 1st June)
Jelena is committed to the following tournaments:
* ITF Fontanafredda (week of 19th June)
* ITF Padova (week of 26th June)
Jelena is #692 in the rankings as of 29th May.
