Andrew's US Open reports

Jelena's sector of the draw:

97. ELENA DEMENTIEVA [6] v Dinara Safina
99. qualifier v Martina Suchá
101. Jamea Jackson [WC] v Cara Black
103. Jelena Dokic v NATHALIE DECHY [28]

Jelena's first match since her loss to Gisela Dulko at Wimbledon - her seventh loss in a row - has an intriguing air of mystique about it. After two months of rest and recovery, will she be the bad Jelena who rushes through points, giving the match away with unforced errors three strokes into the rallies, or the good Jelena who hits clean winners all over the court and has a 3-0 head-to-head over Dechy? I give Jelena a 40% chance.

Is it nice in your snowstorm,
Freezing your brain?
Do you think that your face looks the same?

US Open - Jelena against Dechy

"Jeca_and_Babsi" Live Match Report

******************

First Set
-----------
Deuce Game, but Jelena holds her serve go 1-0 up in first set. Yeah
Jelena is Back.

Dechy serving, Jelena gets a break point, and converts it, 2-0
Jelena, good start.

Jelena's second service game, Dechy gets break point, neither is
dominating so far, and
Dechy breaks back. Jelena only serving at 35% for first serves and 5
unforced errors so far
in three games.

Fourth game, another break point for Jelena, and another to
advantage, Jelena is fighting
the Dechy serve. Great 3-1 to Jeca. Dechy is winning 63% on her
first serve but only 11%
on her second.

But Jelena has to get more first serves in and were up to 9 unforced
errors. Now 4-1 to
Jeca. On the bright side Jeca is winning 88% when getting her first
serves in and winners is
6-1 in favour of Dokic.

Dechy holds her serve to make it 4-2.

Jeca holds her serve so 5-2. Jeca 1st serve percentage creep up to
41% and she has won
10 out of 11 on it so far.

Jeca has a set point at 30-40....now deuce....AD Jeca....but Dechy
holds her serve... can
Jeca hold her nerve on her serve? 5-3 Jeca to serve.

40-15, one more point for the set....Great Jelena wins first set 6-3
:-) Well Done.

Jeca 1st serve % for set below 50% but getting better, 4 double
faults and 20 unforced
errors but 10 winners and 8 break points earned.

******************

Second Set
-----------
Dechy holds her serve to go 1-0 up.

30-15 on Jelena's serve....deuce....AD Dechy....0-2 game to Dechy.
Jelena 1st serve %
slips. and only 29% for that game.

3-0 to Dechy. Jelena needs to regroup. Judging from the webcam Jelena
looks a bit short
of match fitness which is to be expected. 9 unforced errors in this
set already.

30-15 on Jelena's serve....break point to Dechy 30-40....AD
Dechy....Game Dechy 0-4. Oh
No. But Jelena did serve better in that game, even an Ace but she has
only won half the
number of point dechy has so far this set.

worse news 0-5 and not a sight of a break point this set for Jeca.

30-15 on Jelena's serve....deuce....Jelena gets a a doughnut for the
set 0-6.

For set:
1st Serves Jeca 44%, Dechy 81%
Unforced Errors Jeca 16 Dechy 4
Total Points Jeca 14 Dechy 31

Not the best from Jeca, but it was always going to be tough first
match back against Dechy
who beat Capriati and got to final last week.

******************

Third Set
-----------
Jelena is wearing light blue top with darker blue sleeves and skirt,
white collar and trim of
Yonex's finest?? designs, the baggy one like wimbledon, not the tight
one like French
Open. Dechy is wearing all black and looks very honed
and toned.

1-0 to Dechy who holds her serve.

40-15 on Jeca's serve...and holds it, a game to Jelena!!!! 1-1

Jeca get to deuce on Dechy's serve....she is still fighting.....but
2-1 to Dechy

Jelena has served 9 double faults in match so far, and her 1st serve
% is only touching
50%, but better this set so far.

2-2 a serve hold for Jelena. She has won all points when she has got
here first serve in and
she has more winners than unforced errors in this set so far which
she did not manage to
do in either of first two sets.

and 15-30.....but 3-2 Dechy

3-3 were still on serve and Jeca shaves it just on points won in set

AD Dechy on her serve.....Game Dechy 4-3

15-30 on Jelena's serve.....now 40-30....Game Jeca 4-4 Jelena 1st
serve up to 71% and still
in credit on winners against unforced errors... its tight.

0-15 on Dechy's serve...and Jeca breaks to go 5-4 up.. can she win????

17 winners for Jeca to Dechy's 2 in this set so she is trying to win
it rather than doing a
"Myskina" and letting her opponent give it up.

30-40....5-5 all, sad.

40-15 on Dechy's serve....5-6 Dechy holds her serve so Jelena has to
serve to stay in it.

15-15....40-15....40-30.....deuce......AD Dechy......Game Dechy, Jeca
defeated but puts up
great fight....hope she takes some good things out of the match to
move on for rest of
season it was always going to be very tough.

Result:

Andrew's US Open report

Now that all my players are out of the US Open, it's time to start catching up with report-writing! And the first of the gang to die was... Jelena.

"I'm not winning only when I'm winning, I'm winning when I'm losing, too. It was important that I prove I'm not only strong mentally when I'm winning, I'm also strong when I'm losing. I think that's a very important thing that players should have. I think that's the thing that makes a lot of players the players they are today, and destroys a lot of players we don't know."

This is not a quote from Jelena, but from Sesil Karatancheva. Jelena lost her eighth match in a row in the first round of the US Open, as 28th seed Nathalie Dechy - who was runner-up at New Haven after beating Jennifer Capriati - beat her 3-6 6-0 7-5.

But this was very positive compared with Jelena's previous seven matches, all of which she lost in straight sets, and seemed to be mentally not on the court (I saw her losses to Shenay Perry at Birmingham, and to Gisela Dulko at Wimbledon; she did not play at all between Wimbledon and the US Open).

Going by the live score-updates, which I followed point by point at www.usopen.org, Jelena showed much better fighting spirit than in her previous seven matches. She broke for 2-0 in the first set, and again for 3-1 after a game of five deuces. Perhaps she was just playing the US Open for fun - and it's very important for Jelena to rediscover the fun in tennis - but the whole first set smacked of professionalism as she won it 6-3.

Jelena lost the second set 6-0, but with Dechy serving first in the third, Jelena fought hard to stay with her, then broke to serve for the match at 5-4. But that game didn't work out for her, and she lost the match on her serve at 5-6 (despite having 40/15 to force a third-set tiebreak).

I do feel that this was not the Jelena who lost seven matches in a row. It felt much more like Jelena of old, losing one match in a row after a game attempt against an on-form opponent.
