Read Etienne Stekelenburg´s exellent piece of work:

Tulyaganova defeats Barna 6-3 6-3

Ordina Open Holland * By Etienne Stekelenburg
The # 41 ranked Iroda Tulyaganova from Uzbekistan won her second round match against Anca Barna, the # 64 ranked from Germany in two straight sets 6-3 6-3.

Anca Barna lost her first service to Iroda Tulyaganova and said to herself that she was not at all happy with her rackets. Tulyaganova won her own serve after Barna forced deuce three times until Tulyaganova took advantage and finished it off serving an ace for 2-0.
*
Iroda Tulyaganova said her first serve percentage was not good this week and Anca Barna did profit and forced a rebreak for 2-2 before losing her own serve in the 5th game.
*
In the 6th game Tulyaganova’s first serve let her down again but she managed to hold serve with a good variety of winning shots. She saved breakpoints with two well-placed stop volleys and seized the opportunity when Barna’s erroneous smash low into the net.
*
Barna showed her skills in the 7th game when she served a love game with a straight winner and one ace but still trailing 3-4.
*
After Tulyaganova held her own serve she broke Barna’s again in the 9th. The German was leading 40-0 but failed to hit the big points. Tulyaganova produced two line drive winners and Barna’s double fault took the game to deuce. Tulyaganova reached her first set point when her passing dropped slowly from the net on Barna’s side of the court. A good first serve saved Barna’s set point but two forced errors got Tulyaganova the first set 6-3.
*
Iroda Tulyaganova’s first serve percentage slowly increased in the second set. With two aces, eleven winners and only one double fault Tulyaganova always found herself on the better side of the score in the second set.
*
Breaking Barna’s serve in the 2nd and 6th game Tulyaganova held a steady lead and was serving for the match. Barna managed to fight back and broke the Uzbekistan’s serve.
*
After Barna held her own serve for 5-3 Tulyaganova finished the match in the 9th game for 6-3 6-3.
*

Looking back at Iroda Tulyaganova’s shoulder and elbow injuries she said that they might have been caused by the way she was serving. Along with her new coach Dmitri Tomashevich Iroda said they are working on a more accurate serve instead of focussing on more speed.
*
Also competing in a large number of tournaments could have caused her troubles with her injuries, she said. “Always trying to defend your points”. Other players before her, like Navratilova and Hingis, have mentioned that a full schedule and the pressure of defending points can lead to injuries and strain.
*
Tulyaganova’s role as representative tennis player for Uzbekistan is one of helping out the youngsters and it makes her proud playing for her country which she sometimes feels nervous about because she wants to perform at her best playing before her home crowd. Iroda emphazised that the Uzbekistan crowd is the best crowd to play for. Many people in Uzbekistan support her and think of her as a national heroine, according to Iroda some people don’t like her or are envious of her situation. In the future her wish is to start a tennis school to help out the boys and girls who like to learn tennis in Tashkent. She does not see a role as a coach for herself.
*
Where other promising Uzbekistan players like Frangulyan and Lepshenko choose to change their nationality Iroda Tulyaganova never saw a reason to do so. She’s very happy playing for Uzbekistan. Lolita Frangulyan does not see herself play professional tennis anymore and left for the United States to study and play college tennis. Unfortunately the Uzbekistan sponsors supported both Frangulyan and Lepshenko before they left the country.
*
Iroda pointed out that Uzbekistan and the ‘west’ are cultures far apart and that when she left for Germany at the age of 13 she never had time and attention to explore the western culture. She was only a young girl and focussed on playing tennis.
*
At the moment the family is building a new house in Tashkent and she is moving in soon but she is also keeping her small apartment she grew up in because its filled with good memories and “if I feel tired of my parents I can move back to my apartment” she added laughing.
