Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

Really impressive fight. She was playing like absolute shit I couldn't believe what I was seeing but she never gave up and ended up with some quality tennis. Really excited for her Round 2 but she will need to play much better or Kasatkina will kill her.

I swear I won't make it to midweek with all this epic shit . Whatever turned Ana's game on those last 16 games, let's keep it that way. That 3rd set was impressive and, as chingching said, she fought hard and never gave up.

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

In order to evaluate this match properly we have to consider Ana’s shortened off-season preparation because of her back injury and also the fact that she did not play a match since September 2015.

In terms of mentality it was a huge comeback after being 06 03* 0-30 down. During the two games that she lost from *5-1 to *5-3, it seemed to me as if she was hampered by some injury. Hopefully she will be able to recover until the next match.

Given the circumstances, she is going to be the underdog against Kasatkina.

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

Were she not the fighter that she is, this would surely end very quickly in straight sets, so kudos for the mega fight once more to Miss Konjuh.

Her game will need some more time (and then some) to get things really going, but it's important that she won this match, as her confidence surely doesn't need an immediate blow right at the start of a comeback following an injury.

Interestingly enough, she's earned more points with this win alone than in the first 10 weeks of 2015. Hopefully she can extend it some more in the events to come.

As for the next match I'll make sure my expectations stay imprisoned in the basement, as Ana will have to raise her game quite a bit to make it through, and with the short time at her disposal I don't believe it will happen.

But the ball is round and sport is unpredictable, so there's always some hope. A match against Serena would be amazing to see and I'm sure it would mean the world to Ana to make it that far. But even if she doesn't, I'm already satisfied with what she's done in Melbourne this year.

Not sure I really want to see this, but any highlights? ESPN seems to have forgotten to upload the replay of this match

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

hellou people! Welcome back in new season!
I am happy she has won! We could not expect of her to play well after only 3 weeks training in last 4 months, she is no machine and tenis is too complicated to come back in form so quick. But its good that she played with every set better and better. But Radwanska was really bad.
I am not optimistic against Kasatkina, but there is some little hope that she can improve again from set to set and that Kasatkina will have problems with the pressure of favorite. But if everything goes normal Kasatkina will win, she was playing very good since USOPEN, with wins against Suarez, Begu, Gavrilova and Venus. Ana is right now so far away of winning against these players.
Ana told she wants to enter top30 this year. Very ambitious. She can finallly play as many tournaments as she wants that will for sure help and lets hope she will make a step forward in her gameplay, last year was a bit dissapointing expect of grass season. Cant wait until wednesday!

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

Watching Anci play today was both encouraging and disappointing. She seems to be injury free and was striking Te ball very nicely which is great to see. Her raw power and timing is still fantastic and she hasn't regressed in her shotmaking which is a massive plus. The downside though is that it seems players have really started to work her out and she hadn't addressed some really obvious flaws in her game, like her movement and ability to deal with variety. Kasatkina is a bad matchup for Anci for this reason. She was hitting angles, slices, heavy topspin but still hitting with enough aggression that Ana couldn't crush her. And as a result it never really looked like Ana was gonna win this match despite the fact that she was striking the ball much better IMO than Kasatkina. Now that she is no longer unknown she really must work to fix these problems. But she's healthy and striking the ball well so that's a good start

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

Actually, I have a far more negative impression. Yes, the one positive is she's healthy. But her form is absolutely dire. I didn't see the usually aggressive power that we're used to seeing. I feel like she was afraid to miss and held back to keep the ball in play. And yet, she made nearly 50 unf. errors in only 19 games.

Her serve is worse than ever, often having to catch her wayward toss, just like the other Ana. In one stretch, she couldn't put one second serve in.

And her forehand is still a huge liability. Almost every time she is rushed on that side, she makes the error. I don't want to put too much stock into her terrible form here. But I think her injury kept her off the court and prevented her from training and improving.

Her Serve is a problem. But I thought she was striking the ball well off the ground. She just has no plan B so basically every point is going to end with a W or UE But how is this any different to normal

For the very first time I agree with you. In all aspects. I am saying that since one year and for me it's obvious that her team is not professional enough. As these weaknesses are tenis basics. That's the worst of all this.

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

Looks like most of us share pretty much the same view.

Once the match got going and upon seeing how much better Ana seemed to be playing than in the first round, not to mention upon realizing that Kasatkina is nothing special at all, I was convinced Ana was winning this. Of course, I didn't count in her oscillations and the fact that her own serve can be one of her own worste enemies.

Kasatkina really didn't show much apart from good movement and persistance. And not just that, but she seemed to be low in confidence, as she was fistpumping a lot and glancing to her team for approval every now and then. For a big part of the match Ana really looked like the better player on the court, and this turned out to be a genuinely blown opportunity, cause there was very little separating the two.

Apart from her serve melting away in set #2, there were some more issues with Ana's game. The first is of course, going for too much too soon. The second one explains the first one partly, she tended to rush because she couldn't keep up with Kasatkina during rallies, as beyond her 3rd shot Ana would almost every time shoot the ball out or into the net. Another problem is too narrow point of view. She actually has more weapons than even she believes, as was evident when she would (all too infrequently) step a bit more inside the court or approach the net. There were some really nice volleys and drop shots leaving her racquet, but I'm guessing they're not working on tactics and strategy enough for her to keep that in mind throughout the match. For that reason she focuses and relies mostly on her shotmaking from the baseline.

These are just some of the issues I've noticed, but I have to give her some credit also for this event, as she didn't play anything coming into Melbourne, and her off-season was cut short by injury.

Overall this was not a bad showing given the circumstances, but I expect to see some improvements in the following weeks.

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

As time is going on I am less and less sure about Ana. She looks good from time to time but her game overall is very erratic, forget about power and heavy striking shots - it will not save her overall I am afraid. I do not see any big progress, she is still somehow "uncompleted" as a player and I wonder if her team has any clue what to do about it.

Re: Ana Konjuh - Volume 2

-first set was almost OK, almost....

-in the second set she didn't win one servis game (I think)

-too much UE's

-Kasatkina is annoying little brat (just my opinion)
